Hey ya’ll. Can you give me some insight on mid seat versus rear seat jigging rods 10-12 feet long? Advantages or disadvantages? Considering a purchase of my first rear seat model. Have used them lots when I was fly fishing but not crappie fishing. Thanks in advance.

I can't get used to mine. A have an 11' ACC that I struggle with. Now my 10' double touch just feels better. But they're old and so am I. LoL

I really like mine. I use the Bucks Ultra-Lite 11'. The rear seat helps balance the rod by putting the weight of your reel farther back. They can be awkward to reel fish up with if you are fishing deep though, takes a little bit to get used to.
10’ rear seat is about like using 11’ mid seat. 10 and 11 rear seat are about all I use you just need to match the right rod and reel for balance.
10’ rear seat is all I use jig fishing! Most of my jig fishing is done during the spawn to pretty shallow water! My favorite is a ozark! I have a acc crappie stix that I like a lot to.... never need to reel fish so all mine have a bucks mini reel spooled with braid!

I have a 10' Ozark rear seat. Never really got used to it, doesn't seem to suit my style of fishing very well, and it's a pain in the butt to store in my boat.
If you do a lot of shallow dipping/jigging (cane pole style), it may work well for you. I like to cast, or vertical fish deeper water, where a long pole is not of much benefit.
Those rear seats for sure have a different feel....
I'll stick with my mid seat.....

I use fly reels with 8-10 lb line. I feel everything the jig touches.
Years ago I got a 11 ft Bucks Custom rear seat to try.I put a few different styles and sizes of reels on it but never felt quite right to me,went back to mid seat rods and stayed there.
I use a 8wt fly-rod with a crappie reel to reach in along side boats in docks and it works great for that.

I am asking cause your buddy at Thump City only has an 11’ (which I want) in rear seat. Reckon I will buy a few of his 10 footers and add an 11 footer from ACCCrappiestx.Quote:

I have a 10’ Sam Heaton rear seat and love it for jigging. I tried a few different reels to find which one balanced right but nw it balances perfect at the cut out in the cork and is like holding nothing. Excellent sensitivity and plenty strong for my heavy handed methods.
I purchased a BnM ultralight a few months ago for a killer price. I use it for dipping and I have a little Wally Marshall solo reel on the back to only hold line. I could never get comfortable reeling with a rear seat rod.
I have two 12 ft . Sam Heaton rods . One rear seat one middle seat . When jigging shallow I like the rear . When jigging 20 ft. (more dead sticking than jigging ) the ability to rest rod against the arm has it's place .The smaller the reel the better on the rear seat . 12 ' rods are more to my liking than short rods thus a 12 'with a rear seat is a true 12 ' where as a 12' mid -seat is a true 11 ' to me .
I bought a rear seat a couple of years ago and like it for shallow dipping, but once they move out, I go back to my mid seat. Mid seat just seems more natural to me when I'm reeling it in.
when I'm in the REAR SEAT I use what ever rod is appropriate for the method I'm fishing. :Rofl :biggrin
This Slater reel is what I started using on one of my rear seat poles.
Now This is the only reel I use for single pole fishing. It won’t twist the line and line works better thru the guides.
Can mount it anywhere on any pole.
I use them on my Berkeley C series crappie rods.

In my opinion a rear seat would have to be extremely light before i could use them because of an old shoulder injury & i own a barely used 13 foot acc crappie stix crossover rod. I really like the rod but just can't use it without getting extreme pain after about a hour & a half so i went with the original cork 10 footer.
