Do any of the riding mower manufactures nowaday make on that has a clutch like in a car? In other words, put it in gear, let the clutch out or engage it and go until you push the clutch in. I need one (42" max) I don't have to hold the pedal in all the time with my foot due to leg problems.
Bill buy you a small zero turn, all you use is your arms. They're also quick and can cut close to anything. I have a 40" and wouldn't trade it for nothing

You need a non-hydrostatic mower. Wal-Mart has a 42" 17.5up mower with 7 speed transmission.

I have a Craftsman that has a petal that you push to stop and let off to go. It is a hydrostat on a handle on the side. You don't have to push the clutch to reverse. You just pull the handle back. It is less than half of what a zero-turn is. If you have a large yard, I would say zero-turn but with my yard, I can't justify the difference.

Now you’re thinking straight Bill. Some people are afraid of the controls. Like told my wife it’s just like riding a horse, which she has done. To go forward relax the reins, in other words push the handles forward a little, to turn left pull the left rein until you are pointed on the right direction and then move it back to its original position. Do the same for a right turn by pulling on the right rein or handle. To stop just say whoaaaa, just kidding just pull back on the handles to the neutral position. To reverse pull both handles toward you and then to stop move them forward you to the neutral position. In no time you’ll be flying around the having fun and wondering why it took you so long to get one.

OK ship mates. I've been looking at and comparing zero turn mowers and am convinced thats the way to go. Now which one. I've always had a 42" mower which works on my 1 acre of grass (Ok, weeds). I really like what I read about on the Cub Cadet mowers and have it boiled down to 2. Ultima ZT1 42 inch or ZT1 50 inch. The 42" comes with a Kholer motor and the 50 a Kawasaki motor. I know Kholers are good motors but don't know squat about the Kawasaki (1 HP bigger). The 42 is made with 13 gauge steel and the 50 with 11 gauge which is better. Also the 50 has 10" wide rear tires while the 42 has 8". I do have problems getting stuck some times so the 10 should help that. I really like the specs on the 50 but are they worth the extra 400 bucks? Plus I need to verify that it will go thru a 65" wide gate. I'm not about to rebuild that. And of course the biggie. Are the Kawasaki motors any good? Thanks again all.
Kawasaki is the best motor you can get.....well worth the difference in price.....my yard is 3 acres.....I ran one for 25 years....one I have now is 15 years old. Never had a problem with them.

I had a Kawasaki on a Dixon zero turn.
Mowed 90 yards a week for 10 years.
Zero problems, put gas in it and change the oil.

I’ve had a zero turn Dixon then Husqvarna but bought an Exmark this year and it’s by far a better, more sturdy mower. Might want to check those out.

Kawasaki has just recently entered the consumer market. They built their reputation on commercial engines, which were excellent. From what I've heard, their new engines are pretty good.Quote:

Cub Cadet is owned by MTD. I have had a Troy Bilt (also made by MTD) 42" ZTR for over 10 years now. It's been a good mower, but has always been a rough ride. The only repair that I've had to make was a head gasket, the rest is just belts, blades, and a spindle, typical mower stuff.
