Crappie Camp Report
I had a great time down there at Greeson this past weekend. The weather started off with a bang Friday night...so much for a nightstalk. I had a very difficult time fishing on Saturday. The weather was overcast...and I couldn't buy a strike even though I saw tons of activity on the depthfinder. I caught a couple of bream, couple of little bass, and a punkinseed. I got skunked on the crappie...:( The highlight of the day was getting off the lake and heading over to the pavilion for a BS session. Lots of good info, nice set-ups, good food, and best of all, plenty of folks willing to talk crappie.
I got up on Sunday morning a little later than I intended...but I still left Gooch sleeping. I was trying to get my poles out, and a nice male jumps on the line. They were definately better that morning...and then slowed as the morning wore on. I ended up keeping 8 decent fish. No 15 inchers, but still nice fish. Out of all my trips to Greeson, this is the first time this ol' oxbow-raised country boy had caught a mess of those clear water crappie.
Thanks go out to all folks that helped in the event. This now makes the third CC that I have attended, and it definately gets better and better each time. I'm already excited about the Fall Crappie Camp. Hopefully Jerry and Darryl will be rested up by then...:D
I didn't get too many pics while I was down there. I spent too much time fishin', eatin', and bs'in to take time for pics...but I got a few while I was out on the lake.
Looks like perfect weather to me...

Thanks, Chris, for such a fine report. I appreciate your sharing everything with us. Sounds like you AR folks had a fine time. I hope your next gathering is a great one as well. Ray

Hey Ray, the only way that it could've been better was if you had drove up for the weekend. I think we all had a great time at Greeson. But I do hope that we have more stable weather at the next one...for both the fish and myself.
I've been really bogged down with school the past couple of weeks, so I'm really looking forward to gettin' out on the water after school lets out. Hoping to put some good reports up...

hey bobberwatcher,
those fish fried up real good that you caught on greeson. I managed to add a couple of bass to it also from my trip to greeson. Anyway, I haven't had much of a chance to fish, except for killing time on my dock. May try to spider rig on friday morning if weather holds up. I got me a real T-bar to go w/ my pole holders for some real trolling. I need to get that technique down better. Chris, you seem to be the master at boat control for trolling. I've got to get this technique down before my trip to chicot w/ my family in may.
-
Hey Randy, it sounds like your ready to get your feet wet...:D
And you're right, it's all about boat control. I'll be doing quite a bit of fishing here soon, so maybe you could come out and learn first hand. But theres really nothing to it once you learn what works for you and what doesn't. In calm to some wind conditions, I like pointing the bow I like bumping the trolling motor to the 1st or 2nd setting on my TM and coasting until you come back to a stop. Then bump it again. Soon you will figure out exactly how fast they want it. If it gets really windy, I will just drag the chain behind me and still bump the trolling motor and coast till the chain stops me. If you want to fish one particular spot, such as a brushpile, just point the bow into the wind and approach the top slowly correcting for the wind. Once you either run across the top of the pile or bump into the side of it, let the wind push you back off it. Take fish off and run back at it. My technique really consists of both types of boat control. I usually fish a particular spot and then cruise to the next spot. You can find some good fish and some new spots as you move back and forth, especially out on the river.

Hey Randy, Glad I could help fill your belly. It was the least I could do for you saving me from the cold on sat night. If you get a chance to sit on a bucket next to ceb, it will be worth your time and effort. Although I have never set on one myself in hit aluminum yacht, I have seen him in action on Cane Creek. I still haven't figured it out just yet, but I am getting there. :D

I must have missed this thread, Good to see that yall all had big fun at camp once again. Too bad the weather didn't act right for yall, one of these days yall gonna have good weather for it. But regardless, there's nothing better than getting out of the house and on the water with food and fellowship to go along with it.

Hey Johnny, I couldn't have said it better myself. Hopefully you can round up some LA guys to come join us next time...
And I think I like the ring of the "aluminum yacht". I guess she's got a new name now thanks to BW. You know that it's a fishin' boat when you go for function instead of beauty and style...:D
And we shouldn't discuss Cane Creek in this boat control discussion. That's not boat control....its just plain survival out there. Not much room for error while slo-trollin'. 4 poles is the most that I will put in at one time, and even then it gets kinda hairy with any wind. And it takes a strong will to play that 2lb crappie while you fiddle-fart with the dang trolling motor to keep from breaking all your poles in half...;)

Nice fish and report there Chris. Hopefully one of these days I will get up there to join you guys for one of these get togethers.

Hey Dwyane, I sure hope so. But, it won't hurt my feelings if I have to haul the boat down that way to see y'all again...;)
