Fresh water eel! I have only saw one other one, we caught it catfishing! One of the slimyest cretures I have ever seen.
They caught it on the Arkansas River

I’ve caught a couple of them but never seen one that big.
Freshwater Eel. Very cool because the spawn in the Atlantic Ocean and the small eels swim back up the Mississippi to Arkansas River. After they mature in freshwater (Arkansas River) they swim back out to the ocean to spawn. Pretty impressive when you think about all the dams!

I'd be scared to death if I saw one

Used to catch quite a few when I was a kid in southeast Oklahoma back in the 50’s. Caught them on trot lines in a couple of different creeks. Scare you to death when you pulled that line up.
Yep. We have pulled up a few American Eels while sampling with various types of gear. In 13 years, I have only seen three.

Have caught several over the years , mostly in Arkansas River
I caught one as a kid below the spillway of Blue Mountain Lake. I can't remember how or what I caught it on.
Never knew. Wearing rubber gloves due to the slim or electricity. :)
We used to catch them pretty often fishing the lower white river when we were catfishing. Never knew they came all the way up from the ocean .
Used to catch them and use them for trotline bait when I lived in VA in the late 80s. Best trotline bait I ever used. Eel skin makes them damn near impossible to get off a hook, for the fish and for you.
We used to catch a lot of them in the Big Black river in MS. Many years ago. Always let them go.
Gosh thats a big one! I eat them, but I would not touch a live one. haha
What a Flashback to when I was about 10 years old... the water was running over the top of my Grandpaws pond. Little Hatchling Catfish about 1 1/2 inch were coming over the top and going down a hole about the size of a Coke Can - none were coming back out.. Of Course my brother and I had to put the Bream hook with a worm in it to catch any cats and throw them back into the Pond ... there was a bite that like to have jerked my arm off and broke the line. We went to some Braided that was on my Uncles Bait caster with a bigger hook ... Now bro and I both had a Hold on the line -- we would take a little line then the Eel would take it back -- this went on for about 5 minutes and we were starting to believe there was a cavern size hole and the fish was too Big to ever get up through the hole,, when the Monsters head showed and we thought we caught the snake from hell --- we could not let go of the line fast enough.. when we got to the house we were not believed.. we got some Trot line and a Catfish Hook and finally got our big Brother to come down to the pond with us just in case there was a snake. Big brother dropped the baited hook into the hole and it tried to jerk his arm off. The next time the head showed there was a 22 shell hit the mark. the size was so close to the one Pictured , I would put them side by side
Good story!
When I was a kid we used to catch them all the time in the Big Black River at Hwy 27. We even caught them in our ponds 5 miles from the river. They are the slimyist thing you will touch.
