Good haul, I looked in a few of my spots today, up here Northern part. Not yet maybe this weekend after the rain, if it hits.
Welp.... I'm jealous

I have 2 early spots that will tease me into hitting the deep woods and I got these at the edge of a 4 wheel drive lane and so when done picking, came back home, jumped on the atv, went into the deep woods and checked 3 areas in the open woods where I find them and yep, got sucked in to walking a mile and didn’t fine another as the woods is maybe a week out from them coming up on the north crowns of the ridges. I checked a couple of early yellow/ white shroom spots and nothing there either. But,,,if we get alittle rain in the high 70,s temps,,,they might just pop. Will have to keep checking daily now to hit them.
Turkeys going nuts also. Toms on the warpath.
Mmmm those look great!

There is really something wrong with the world. We have mushrooms, turkeys and crappie all at the same time. But I guess they would make a good but strange meal.:cheers2
Nice find. I think you are right on the good year. There’s a bumper crop in southern most part of Indiana.

I have eaten a lot of them. Just have to slice, flour, and fry them in oil. I once found about hundred of them on a island at a fly in fishing camp couple hundred miles north of Sioux Lookout Ontario. We had a heck of a fry with walleye that nite!
An old timer I hunted mushrooms with had them grow around his pond. They fried them up...I am a little more cautious as I have young boys and don’t really know. I have heard they are called false morels and can make you sick?

nice! thanks for posting
don't take the chance with false morels. some have higher toxin level than others.
For every good mushroom, there's a bad look alike.
Very nice!! I'm jealous! Good eats there

If i remember right the false morels have solid, not hollow stems. I read that somewhere once but its been long ago. I found one morel that looked just a little off years ago, and sure enough stem was not hollow

Found about 30 more early fresh blacks, 12 peckerheads, first 4 small yellows, in the deep woods, all just came up so it’s really starting good. I think next week will be awesome for the shrooms. We definitely have the moisture and heat for them this year. :cheers2
GLOAT, GLOAT, GLOAT. :Rofl I'm kidding but jealous. Since I put turkey hunting on hold because I don't like being shot at (and I fish better than I hunt), I don't get out in the woods too much to find these. I guess I'll just drool in private.:kewl

These are false morels for those that don't know. Notice the cap isnt connected to the stem. Theres also a odd smell...just fyi
The wife quit eating them, :biggrin So we are frying them up, then freezing laid out on cookie sheet and vacuums sealing, will use a air fryer to heat up and are perfect to eat. You could heat in a oven. I had a mess tonite to eat again. I just don’t get tired of eating morels or finding them either. :cheers2 I used to chase them as they came up all the way to northern Michigan. Ya got to love springtime!!!
Get em while they are hot, about a week left in the southern to central IN season.
indyyak, I never found any false morels like those! the ones I find are way different looking than regular morels. I have had people tell me that the half frees( dogpeckers) aren't morels.
i cant see o post pics here anymore now. cant drag n drop or insert. the reply to thread button dosnt work either every time. changes on here? other goofy stuff happening o here too. typing even messed up on here. cant pull page down either. just pops rite back up to top wen let off slide bar. <br type="_moz">
The only false morels I ever found were in town, they had a bit of gooey substance on them.
That was many years ago and before I had heard of them. I picked them and decided by the time I walked home "I'm not eating these".
Found a few before the monsoon hit this afternoon.
