Went to Amon Carter and Ray Roberts (Buck Creek area) last weekend. Water temps at both around 63 degrees. Water on the lower end of Amon Carter was gin clear, but like chocolate milk at Ray Roberts. Tried minnows and jigs both. Tried shallow and out deep. Nuthin' at either. Not even a bite. I am hoping they haven't already done their thang. Going back this weekend to give 'em another try.
Are you fishn structure in shallow and work the depths out deeper fishn structure?

I heard some males were up on the shore at RR , try buck creek the east bank back close to the rr bridge .
Don’t know about Amon G but I hear arrowhead is on so I bet it is as well somewhere
The new side of the lake is so clear they might be on deep beds ?
I usually did pretty good by the bridges and rocks around Buck, and the trees along the channel. I destroyed a prop getting way back in there once.
Man, I tried everything but putting on scuba gear and going in after them! I have surmised that they are biting at night. Going to go after them again Friday evening.
If you decide to go the scuba route, just let me a tie a line to you while you pretend to be a jig and odds are good they’ll ignore you completely. Then you can get close enough to nab the suckers
They may only be goin shallow at night but believe me they will eat the right jig in the face in the day time.....

I have a theory of why the fish on almost all the lakes are waiting till dark to go shallow but it'll be almost year before I say so....
Like I mentioned structure is key in the 8 to 14fow just out from the spawning grounds.....
I tried white and chart, pink and chart, monkey milk jigs in that gin-clear water. I tried live minnows. Jigs tipped with minnows. Slab sauce. Tried tight lining, slip float, and just plain cork fishing. The place gets deep really quick right off the bank with lots of rocks and dead timber. In a cove with a 20 foot deep creek running out of it. I got 2 brush tops in there too. Not sure what I am doing wrong. I have caught a couple of 3 pounders in there, so I know there are crappie there. Just getting pretty frustrated trying to find them in the daytime. I grew up only fishing at night with yo yo's or with lights. Kind of new to the jigs. Also got me a spider rig. Haven't tried that yet. I think they go shallow at night due to the bright sun during the day. HALP!!!
Are you marking any fish on the cover, creek channel/edges, or anywhere where you’re fishing? Or are you flying old school with no finder? You haven’t mentioned it. A lot of times I used to find them suspended in water near 20ft deep or more around this time. Quite a bit above the floor even. So If it drops quick and is deep, that might be the case. You would think you would still get at least one bite on a fall though at some point if you’re on some fish.
I used to not ketch any crappie there (rr) in the spring until it got dark and about midnight one night a herd of toads got up on the bank in front of us and under the boat in about 10 fow between the treeline and the bank .....come daylight you couldn’t beg a bite no matter where you dropped a bait
I got a Garmin 53dv sonar. I THINK I see fish on it. Yes, I'm pretty OLD school. I must admit I am learning as I go. I don't think I know what I am doing. Thinking of finding me someone that actually knows how to find these critters to go with me and show me the ropes. I'd just like to be able to catch me a mess to eat when I get time to go. I’ve never been on Amon, but I’ll kiss my you know what if there ain’t any fish on the pilings by the Buck ramp. That should be the easiest fish to find there right now. I don’t remember exactly how deep it is but I know it’s over 20’. Should be some from around 14’ to the floor. Some of the pilings closer to the bank might have em a little shorter. Ray turns on later than most DFW lakes so it’s getting close. I’d bet there are indeed fish shallow and catchable after dark, but those pilings and the channel edges and timber along it are 100% where I’d focus if I was in a boat and on that water.

Amon is a different bird though and I never been there in the spring , that new lake is like a mini lake fork and really clear water ,the old one is like a lake worth and really turbid , I am not sure what side he is hitting and have no clue on either side where they like to spawn .
