Has anyone heard any information regarding the annual crappie tournament on Red Rock?
I spoke to the gentleman that runs it about a month or 6 weeks ago and he told me May 25th tentatively but I've not seen or heard anything that would confirm that.
Anybody hear anything further about this tournament?
I spoke to the gentleman that runs the tournament, it will not be held this year unfortunately. Anybody know of any other tournaments?
That is unfortunate. This is the one crappie tournament we really have to look forward to in Iowa. Growing up in Missouri there was always tons of crappie tournaments, and I've been disappointed by the lack of crappie tournaments since I moved up here 6 years ago. What does it take to get a tournament series going up here? Iowans do not realize how great of crappie fishing they have up here. When it comes to consistently catching big crappie, I would put Red Rock above Truman or Lake of the Ozarks. That is really saying something, considering I grew up fishing tournaments on Truman and Lake of the Ozarks my entire life.
I am at a point where I am willing to work with some people to get a series going. I know there was a group "Southern Iowa Crappie Club", I think that did something at some point. I am looking for feedback, and lessons learned. I know there are several hundred views on this thread, so please start replying and get engaged!
Thanks!
This is very unfortunate. I’ve been looking forward to this tournament all winter. I agree with showtime fishin we need more crappie tournaments in Iowa. We have three great reservoirs with great crappie fishing and no support for any tournaments. I’m definitely on board and will support a series.
anyone interested in a fruit jar tourney on May 18 if legal? anyone have a scale?
At this point, I am thinking long term. Would it be nice to replace the one that usually happens in May? Absolutely, but I don't think we have enough time to get something properly set up. I am wanting to start a series that has at least two to three tournaments a year. We just need interest, engagement, and participation. Iowa has the lakes to have a great crappie series, we just need the people.
agreed. Maybe go the charity tourney route. I am in for however I can help.
Same for me. I grew up in Missouri fishing tournaments as well. The one on Red Rock was all we had up here! There was some talk of those guys getting the Southern Iowa Crappie Club going again but it never did. There seems to be plenty of guys interested in fishing a few tournaments. I'll fish everyone I can and will help get this going however I can. Red Rock, Saylorville, Rathbun would all be good lakes for a series. Let's figure out how to make this happen and get it going. Glad to see the interest from folks!
Ok lets not let this die this time......how do we get a tournament series going? I honestly have not the first clue where to even start! I think between Red Rock, Saylorville and Rathbun, 2 tournaments on each spread out from April 1st until???? A couple of September/October tournaments would even be fun. Maybe start with only 2-3 tournaments the first year to see how many folks show up for them? Just throwing out ideas here. If we got this going now we could maybe even get a late summer/early fall tournament in. I don't have Facebook but if somebody that does wants to attempt to contact someone from The Southern Iowa Crappie Club there may be some info there as far as organization and maybe even someone willing to help get the ball rolling. The flier from last year's Red Rock tournament is posted on their Facebook page and I believe that has the gentlemans phone number on it, he would also be an asset to this I think. His name is Rob. Any ideas from anybody?
I have started the process of looking into starting a tournament trail. I have been pricing things out and my fishing partner is talking with an insurance contact to determine the details around that. I think it would be fun to start an Iowa State Championship across the three lakes you stated. I know a few fishing teams from Missouri that would come up for tournaments if we can get something decent going. The earliest I would be able to get something going would be 2020. Like I said though, I am just getting details gathered.
However, if someone from the Southern Iowa Crappie club could get something going again, that would be awesome. I think we have enough interest to have a good number of boats for each tournament.
Maybe get Coralville in the mix for us easterners
