Sally Hansen for Head Cement

I Don't use head cement or a whipping tool. I tie strictly by hand. Upon finishing, I use Sally clear. The methods I use to not make a mess is: One, I dip my skinny bodkin in the Sally and and use the clear on the Bodkin as an applicator. Two, after I finish the knot tying (last) I apply Sally clear on about 2-3 inches of thread, then, I wrap the string with the Sally clear and cut then string. These ideas I got from Utube. This way is no mess. You folks probably all about know this though.

Somebody mentioned messy head cement, and I can't remember what recent post the issue of cement was in. You may can do head cement this way too. I also have used tooth picks instead of the Bodkin. Sometimes the Bodkin plays hide and seek on me.

This iMac changes words on me. If this doesn't make sense, I will use my IBM. It is also illiterate.

Good idea Tom, thanks for passing it on. I thin mine and use a needle applicator squeeze bottle. Usually lose em before they come apart anyway.

Cane Pole, the easiest way to add glue to your knot after the jig is finished just add one good drop of Lacquer and Thinner mixed about 50/50. It will penetrate and dry fast also will not leave a hard spot on your chenille. As for Actual head cement Sally's is fine, but that is the head of a fly which is just thread. If you want to coat the head after it's painted due to adding eyes and such Sally's is fine for that too unless you have a Chartreuse or FL Yellow head because the Sally's will make you nice paint job look like crud!

Anyway I bought a qt of Clear High Gloss Lacquer and some thinner about 14 years ago and that lacquer is still about 3/4 full, lol! I bet if I bought them little bottles of Sally's or Head Cement all this time it would have cost a lot more and all my jig heads would have a hard spot, lol! This part of tying is very simple, but the language used is not correct really. Head Cement is a cement for a fly head. I use about 3 or 4 different kinds of glue for different things, but none of them will I use on my chenille finish other than my thing lacquer!

Dang I made me some more just Saturday, lol! I still have enough of my first qt of lacquer that I could make 3 qt's of chenille/thread finish glue, lol!

Man it's too easy to do, get a little plastic bottle to use it is and fill about half way with Clear High Gloss Lacquer and other half thinner, it's done!

I thought nail polish was lacquer??????????? Ima not a cosmetologist by no means. I thin Sally with nail polish remover. It is pretty runny.

I know about the hard spots. I useta get spots when I used the polish brush to apply Sally. Brushing the string fixed it.
Like I said, I saw this howto stuff on Utub.

Yes that is Lacquer, but high cost when compared to regular Lacquer. You can keep buying them little bottles of Sally's and thing then or you can buy a Pt. can of Clear High Gloss Lacquer, then it as you go and it will last many years! That is main part, well other then thing the heck out of it!

If you prefer buying fingernail polish that's cool, but just know over time it will cost you. Also know youtube is not the end all to everything tying! Personally I have always enjoyed the info on FAOL more, not that I never look at a video on youtube because I do, but I also know anyone can put anything on there and it's not always the best way, it's what that one guy or gal does whether right or wrong.

I understand what U say about Utub. I try stuff out before I post. Some ideas work, some don't. I sure understand saving money on quantity, but at my age and place in life, money is not an issue. I have been blessed.

I'm pretty much with Cane Pole on this except I do whip finish and then put a drop of Sally's Hard as Nails on the threads with the bodkin. It does sometimes leave a hard spot just behind the head and often touching the chenille. That hasn't proven to be a deterrent for the fish. My ties hold up very well, so longevity isn't an issue either. Heck I even know some guys who use nothing at all on their threads and say they have no issues. I think some of this comes from the fly tiers and the spider web threads they used.
