Hello all!
I do a fair amount of jigging and line twist is driving me nuts. I have tried to use a swivel and a leader to help prevent the line from twisting, but have had mixed results. Two questions:
1. How do you combat line twist while jigging?
2. Do you use a leader of fluoro after a swivel if you are using braid?

First, what do you mean by “jigging”? That term gets thrown around a lot, and it means different things to different people.
Are you casting jigs? Vertical jigging? Trolling with jigs?
I don't do much "vertical jigging" .... but, one thing I can suggest is to make sure that your plastics are dead center straight on the jig hook. :twocents
Valid question, I am talking about vertical jigging with small plastics on a jig head.
If you are using braid, there shouldn't be any issue with twists.. the supple line will just absorb the twists and you'll never see them, unlike mono/fluoro.
I just respool when my mono line rods get full of twist, that's why I use cheap hi-viz line on those rods. Crappie maxx is what I have been using lately and I like it. its $8 for 3200 yards, you can respool weekly for half a year for $8.
If using a spinning reel and stripping line off without opening bail that’s where most of it will come from. Take the time on way out take bait and any snap off. Strip line out and pull behind boat for a bit and most twist will come out. Then make a habit of opening bail to let out line.
Also closing the bail by hand will cut down on twist
Here is what I use. Buy them off eBay. Work good, are reversible, super light and can strip line right off them. Best thing is they are cheap. Just takes a couple 3 weeks to get them. Same or better quality than the WM or B&M. I use the ST60 which is the largest of this type reel. Fill with cheap 10 lb test and top off with about 20 yards of braid or quality mono.

Lots of reasons for line twist, anywhere from how you spool the line, to making sure you close the bail by hand. Hopefully some of these suggestions will help. [emoji1303]

May try line and lure sold as bass pro. Supposed to prevent line twisting amongst other things. Don’t know haven’t been fishing yet.
I do open and close the bail of my spinning reels by hand, though I often wonder if I spool the reels correctly. Does a swivel do much for such a light weight lure like a crappie jig?
A long cast and reel it back in will help. In between trips hook your line to something solid, walk off 50 or 60 ft and give your line a good stretch 2 or 3 times. Hold the line in your hand at the reel or you will bury it on the spool.

I am going to try this soaking technique also, just bought Berkley 4 lb XL
Had Scheels spool up another reel I use for Walleye with 6lb test, got home and line just coiled of the spool
I use kvd line and lure conditioner on everything -from bass fishing baitcasters to all my crappie stuff best stuff i ever used and ive tried them all spray before spooling and on our reel night before fishing and you are set to go.:biggrin
Also important and not mentioned previously: If your drag is clicking while you are reeling, you are not bringing in any line but your are twisting it like crazy. Depending on your reel's gear ratio, it might be 5 or 6 twists for every revolution of the handle! Do that all day long and it won't matter how you close the bail or how you put your line on the spool.

There is a reason there is a huge market in it for Ice fishing now. Me included. You get wicked line spin vertical jigging. We don’t cast through ice so it’s straight down and back up.
Spool my reels well and still get it. Have seen it under water with cameras through the ice. You will get refusals by the fish. I had my jigs spinning like a helicopter before. Good swivels and an in-line reel helps tremendously. One of the main things I see under the ice is we impart to much action to the jig. Bouncing it. Stop. Hold it still, or just a quiver. Those up and down bounce guys do it way to much. A boat is easier yet. Your already moving cause the water in a boat. So hold it still.
The problem also come on the retrieval up. It spins.. hard to get around that.

Have you tried the braid and fluoro leader combo? It will eliminate that head ache for you, as well as increase your sensitivity. The fluoro leader gives you the abrasion resistance you don't get with straight braid. Hope this helps.
I like to cast jigs. I use Fluro lines. Closing the bail by hand and pulling the line tight before reeling in helps a lot. The other thing that really helps is taking the line off the top of the line spool when loading onto the reel. Look at how the line is loaded on the spool. Your reel will load line counter clockwise. You want to stand so the reel loads the line in the same direction as it is loaded on the spool. Don't overfill your reel. I was putting on line to the last quarter inch of the reel spool. That was causing some of my line twist
If you do a search on Youtube there are some good videos talking about how to eliminate line twist
I don't know if I would rather deal with tying Knots in thin braid or deal with line twist in mono / fluo!!!!!!!!Quote:

As far as tying knots with braid ... if the braid is brand new (or still very "slick") then I tie an Overhand Knot in the tag end ... It ain't that I dont know how it dealing with that thin slick line with that old beat up hands...Tying lines above 20# or so I have no problem......but that thin slick line low poundage crappie is hard enough to see much less handle.Quote:

Braid is your best bet but sometimes doesn't allow the best light lure action which is the reason I use a 6# test FC leader connected with a uni-knot. (same for lures)
As far as taking twist out of any line, I pull it off the reel a good casting distance in the grass with nothing on the end. I'll hold the line between two fingers while reeling it in.
Always close the bail by hand when reeling.
Strange - the only twist I've ever gotten is using in-line spinners with mono.
