The one that got away.... but didn't

Kinda shows my age...

1977 winter time in Alaska serving Uncle Sam lake trout fishing on Quartz lake.Ice over 10" thick with vehicles (3 or 4) driven out onto it.At that time I had exactly 1 fishing pole to my name as a young GI.The water was crystal clear,10-12 foot deep and you could see everything on the bottom through a ice hole.We angered holes and there was already holes from other fishermen in the ice.
Salmon eggs on a hook with a small split shot.Bites were kinda slow ,but hey,we were fishing catching just an occasional lake trout.....Light bulb turns on and I get an idea......Have a buddy watch my pole while I walk across the ice to get a stick.Bring the stick back,cut my line,tie it to the stick and now I have two fishin poles....The stick is about 4 foot long and the ice hole is best I remember 12 ". I tie my line to the middle of the stick,put hook,split shot,and salmon eggs on it and drop it in an unused ice hole.Rigged first pole and resumed beer drinkin duties at the campfire on the ice nearby.Yes, you can burn a campfire on top of the ice in the winter......
After awhile I saw the stick fishing pole making good time headed for the hole.I hustled across the ice as fast as I could but when the stick got to the hole one end entered the hole and my new fishing pole was gone...Dang I hated that,how could I be so unlucky as to have a 4' stick,line tied in the middle, go into a 12" hole?????
Quite awhile passed when I noticed the first pole heading for its' ice hole.Double-timed it and got a hold of the handle with the tip pointing down into the hole.Reeled it in and had a descent lake trout but there was another line wrapped around the end of my line..Got on my knees and began pulling it in.Looking into the hole short time later appears my 4' stick stuck under the ice(like it should have been on top of the ice). Pull the other end of the line and lo and behold there's the fish that got away but didn't........Who woulda thunk?

Attachment 337064We were fishing on this old boat, my previous boat, casting the shallows with a Rooster Tail. My buddy casts, and it goes over a limb, and is dangling about three inches above the water. A smallish bluegill begins to jump out of the water, trying to get the Rooster Tail! After about four jumps, he succeeded, and my buddy proceeded to fight the limb, with a gill attached to his lure!

My dad who taught me and was my fishing buddy were fishing at Lake Lucas in the winter time. We both had insulated coveralls on and were trolling along the bank casting looking for bass or anything that would bite. I happened to throw up into an overhanging tree and we went over to get it. Couldn’t quite reach it so told dad hold the chair and I would step up and grab it. Well around swings the chair and dumps me right in the water boots and all. Once I surface and scramble back into the boat with the help of my dad the laughter starts. Well I’m blaming him, he’s blaming me we are both laughing. It’s not cold ( I’m freezing) let’s keep fishing. Nope my dad knows better so home we go. I can’t even remember if we got the lure or not but I will never forget this memory of many I have with my dad. I miss him everyday.

Pulling picos with my brother at a local state lake when my brother said look at that snake behind the boat! He had managed to snag him when he got him up to the back of the boat the snake wrapped around my steering cable and we were in a tug of war! My brother was on the front deck yelling he wants the crank bait just let him have it you can see he wants it just give it to him lol!!!PICO catches everything

Funny story!!! Watching 4 Alabama boys pick up a picnic table with Billbob still sitting on the bench seat and move it into the shade, Crankfest 2018 , and believe we have pictures?

Are you trying to hold that little snake closer to the camera to make it look bigger? LOL

We arrived back at the dock on a windy day. I stepped out and was going to secure the boat, but the wind blew it away from the dock. My wife reached out so I could grab her hand and pull the boat ( with her in it) to the dock. Needless to say, my pulling caused her to lose her balance, and she splashed down. Instinctively, I scrambled for the boat! I stayed dry, but was in hot water, if you get my “drift”!

The water temperature was in the 40’s, and she came out cold and shaking! Not to worry! My wife wrapped her tightly in MY coat! Then it was me that was shaking!

Last year I was taking my older sick brother fishing. He had just got out of dialysis and wanted to get some fresh air. So I picked him up in the truck and off to the lake we went. I let him out at the ramp and I backed the boat in and tied it to the docks. Got my brother and helped him to the docks. As I was holding his arm helping him get in the boat, I stepped back and lost my balance. He tried to hold me up as I was falling backwards into the boat and both of us slammed down right in the boat. Luckily he fell on top of me but we broke a pole and flipped the transom motor holder right into the water. Nobody hurt so we’re sitting there laughing like crazy. Little did I know that would be the last time he was able to fish with me. Sadly he passed last November. He’ll be missed greatly.

Attachment 337523I have taken friends to my honey holes, and I was the one who got bit! Days later, fishing alone, and arrive at my favorite spot, and guess who’s parked on it? I was mad, but I can’t be mad. I was disappointed. In him, because he crossed an invisible line, IMO. Mainly disappointed in myself for sharing my secret. On second thought, this ain’t funny at all!

My wife and I went catfishing one night on my pontoon and I was kneeling down taking a fish off and had my headlamp on to see what I was doing. The next thing my wife sees is me falling backwards because a bat was trying to get bugs and smacked me right in the head!!! Scared the crap right out of me. We still laugh about that night.

when i was 7 or 8 i fished with my grandpa. we were on the lake one day and were close to a limb that hung out just a few inches over the water. papaw pointed at it and said you see that limb there. i said yessir. he said the last time he was here a squirrel was sitting on it eating an acorn. after just a minute a huge bass jumps up out of the water and ate the squirrel. he said he just kept watching the limb not believing what he just saw when the same bass eases up out of the water and puts another acorn back on the limb.....now the funny part is that i believed him for years after that.

When I was married to my ex-wife, she went out every Friday night for “girls night.” She started staying out later and later every week. Who ever gave her a ride home, dropped her off down the street. I started getting suspicious so one Friday night I hid out in the garage behind my boat. It was there I noticed some hydraulic fluid on the floor behind the boat. Do you all think I could have a o ring leaking on the power trim?

THE LINE WAS JUST RIPPING OFF THE REEL AND I WAS TAKING THE REST OF MY POLES UP SO I COULD GO BACK AND GET MY CRANK BAIT IF POSSIBLE . WHEN I FINALLY GOT THE ROD IN MY HANDS . I SAID THIS AIN'T NO STUMP IT IS PULLING . SO IT GREAT ANTICIPATION I FIGURED I HAD A BIG OLE CAT FISH . SO FOR THE NEXT 45 MINUTES ME AND IT WENT HEAD TO HEAD . I TAKE IN SOME LINE AND HE WOULD TAKE IT BACK . FINALLY GOT CLOSE ENOUGH TO SEE SOMETHING DOWN IN THE WATER . I COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHAT IT WAS , IT SHINED LIKE A MIRROR . SO I TOLE MYSELF THAT AIN'T NO CATFISH . SO THIS WENT ON AWHILE THEN I GOT IT TO THE BOAT . I AM GIVE OUT AND JUST PLAN WHOOPED . THE UGLIEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN COME UP . GOT BIG BULGING EYES AND HUGE . YOU WOULD THINK THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN IT . NET WAS TOO SMALL THE DANG THING IS SO SLIMY I CAN'T HOLD ON TO IT AND I AM NOT GIVING UP MY CRANK BAIT . AFTER SOME CUSSING AND FUSSING I DRAG IT UP ON THE BACK OF THE BOAT . NOW I CAN'T KEEP HIM IN THE BOAT . I THOUGHT I NEED A BIG WASHING MACHINE FOR THIS ONE . IT HUNG THE HOOKS TO MY CRANKS IN THE CARPET AND STRAIGHTENED THEM OUT . FINALLY THREW HIM IN THE BOTTOM OF THE BOAT . NEVER THOUGHT A BUFFALO GOT THAT BIG . I JUST COLLAPSED IN THE BACK SEAT TO RECOUP . I GUESS HE HAD HAD HIS RED BULL . I SURE NEEDED SOMETHING .

Ok, I've got video proof of this one! LOL. Years ago I was fishing the Ohio River in January and was reeling in what I thought was a giant blue catfish. I finally get it to the boat...and it's 2 fish! I had caught a small blue cat and then a spoonbill had got wrapped up in my line!

Going camping this week, and trying to figure out a way to get my boat there. It will be my first time pulling something this big, 33’, so not comfortable with pulling behind the camper. I am going to try to cram two 10’ yaks somewhere, and fish with them. Bought the yaks for others to use, and haven’t used them myself. My usual yaks are much longer, so going to try these. 3 years ago, I checked my son out of school early to go fishing. We get to the ramp and both of us are really eager to get out there and catch some fish. I put him in the boat, backed it in and got in to troll to the dock so I could park the truck. I was trolling to the dock and was gonna cut the boat around and tie it off. I thought the boat was far enough past the dock that I could go ahead and cut it and pull right along side. I cut the trolling motor and the boat hit the dock and sling me over the side. I still had ahold of the trolling motor rope, so I gave it a tug to right myself. It's a shallow dock, so when I stood up, my son was on the front deck of the boat and his first words were, "I didnt know we were going swimming today!!" 4 year olds have a way with words sometimes. I can laugh now, but I lost a phone and a can of snuff out of that swim.

I was a young seaman home on leave and myself and a 2nd cousin plus a buddy went fishing in Briar Creek which is pretty small. Jerard my rich cousin had gotten a new Browning auto shotgun for Christmas and turns out he is VERY afraid of snakes but he had the boat, 12' jon boat so we had to get him to go. He really didn't want to go but he finally said OK. We told him he could sit in front and shoot the snakes when he saw them. Small creek with bushes hanging over the water with snakes of course. No motor and going down stream and the only time he saw a snake was when it slid into the water, no shots. Big log across the creek, going no father, don't remember catching any fish. Had to paddle back up to the truck, Jerard, "no no not going back". So I told him I would get up front and shoot the snakes and he could set in the back and the snakes had two others to bite before they got to him, so we headed back. Got to this place where the bushes hung over both sides with only a few feet clear in the middle. Jerard "SHOOT HIM SHOOT HIM" and I never saw a snake. Guess the back end of the boat got even with the snake and he jumps up and runs over Leslie in the middle and gets to the front with me and turns the boat over. Now we all in the water and I'm sure not liking being there with the snakes and drop the shotgun. We all get to the bank and of course Leslie and I had to go back to the log and get the boat and take it to the truck. We go home and tell Jerard to have his folks go get the gun. Two or three days later his Dad comes to my house and asks me where the gun is, Jerard would not tell them. I took them there and one of them got in the creek and found the gun, needless to say we never went fishing with Jerard agin.

Attachment 339384The day that I test drove this boat, the owner launched me. As I was floating around, familiarizing myself with everything, I started noticing water pooling around my feet. I yelled for him to back the trailer in real fast. After hooking it to the trailer, and rapidly pulling it out, we noticed that he had put the plug in the wrong hole! Water drained for about 15 minutes at a heavy clip. I put the plug in myself, drove the boat, and ended up buying it!
