wanted to post this helpful link...
several threads on these boards the past 2 weeks about the great fishing now on Blackshear.. I'd hit Smoak bridge to see if they were still there...
there is fish in all lakes and rivers . you have to learn the best way to fish the lake you are going to fish on . mainley where and with a good map you can find the good spots for the right time of year.i have alwayes herd hat the fish are in 10% of the water .when going to the lake look at the cows . they are in a huddle feading or scattered . that is the way the fish are . and usealey around brush or drop offs and bridge pilings . some times they are scattered out on flats .that is when i troll the flats .
I am the new guy here. From reading the posts everyday I have noticed there have been occassional posts about the Blackshear activity and water conditions. Lately, like the others mentioned, Smoake Bridge has been a rewarding spot using black and chartreuse jigs. However, with all that said, the storm that just blew through here might effect alot of things, esp water clarity.
smoke bridge will clear up quicker . it is on a spring fed creek flowing into the lake . thr rain up the river doesen`t affect that creek much . it might back up into it . the locale rain will muddy it up for a few dayes .
I am gonna carry her saturday morning. She is 8 and loves to fish. She loves to go weather she catches anything or not. she will sit in a boat all day and never complain. I would like to take her one time and her catch some fish. We went and fished at the park and caught a few. we will probably try it at smoak bridge. is there any secret to catching catfish around the bridge. anyone ever heard of baiting them with rice? Is this legal? I appreciate all the information
Rice? Rice? Mmmmm,.. I'll definatly have to Google that.
The reason I ask was I was in Eufaula week before last and met these guy that were hauling them in on reels and jugs . They said they had poured out a 25 lb bag of rice in the area they were catching them.
let me know what you come up with.
thanks

I had an old timer tell me how to bait a whole with cotton seed meal, alfalfa hey and syrup. He said you break open a bail of alfalfa mix in the cotton meal and syrup to help it stick to the hey then tie the bail back together. Tie a cinder block to it and sink it a day or two befor you want to fish the spot. It brings in the bait fish which brings in the bigger fish.
that will work for crappie or bass . channel cat don`t eat live fish . maby the appalousa cats they eat live fish .dog food will work . you can buy cat fish food . the sinking kind will work . all for channel cats . have herd of rice being used . never tried it . anything will need to be put out a few dayes befor you go to draw in the fish . the channel will be the best place for catfish .
I googled using rice, but didn't reallt find anything. Found a mention of using Wheaties cereal and Karo syrup to make bait balls, that was claimed to work great. I used to use canned dog food and canned cat food, poking small, tiny holes in the sides of the cans, and sinking the cans in the morning, then fishing them that afternoon - always had good results from that. I have even caught catfish using uncooked peanuts in the shell, using wild grapes, using uncooked corn kernals. I think a catfish will bite anything, you just have to get them there first.
