Orange line with a leader for longlining?

I am having problems seeing even the yellow florescent line when longlining. I saw a thread about using orange line and it gave me the idea that this may cure some of my problems keeping up with the line off the back of the boat in the turns. Remus had the same problem I had the other day. I was thinking and that's dangerous I know, about trying it with a leader attacked several feet away from the main line to the jig. What would be the disadvantage if any? I know it may scare fish away if I ran it directly to the jig. Also, the sun may fade the line. But, I don't think it would be any worst than with any other line. Need you'll to guide me to a better way of seeing the lines! :help

If used in muddy water, where orange is the new chartreuse or was that pink, crappie could follow it all the way to your jig.

I run leaders on all of my long line rigs. Wylie and Norman can both get really clear at times and I don't like having high vis all the way to the jig for reasons you stated above.

when pulling jigs longlining at .8 to 1.2 mph I don't think a Crappie or any other fish is going to be following your line down to the jig !!! Crappie will be coming up at your jig if it sees the line color its arse is already hooked !!! I fish nothing but vicious hi-vis yellow all the way tied to the jig never had any issues yet !!!!

Id use the orange all the way to the jig. I doubt the crappie would even notice it. But I'm guessing.....

Me and my buddy always use hi-vis line when pulling jigs, even in clear water. Wally Marshall said "my grandma fished with black sewing thread and she caught all kinds of crappie!" lol But who's to say how many MORE we'd catch with fluoro? (Personally, I don't think line color makes any difference.)

I haven't tried 'em yet but ALL of my catfishing rod and reels are lined with orange line. (That's why I don't think line color matters.)

Ive' long lined pulling hi vis, fluorocarbon. and clear can not tell any difference in how fish react. I have never pulled in gin clear water though.

Hey! What brand and name of the orange line are you finding in 6# test? I wanna try it myself.

That is very good line! It is a copolymer which means it will sink, good for long lining but not good for float fishing. Its REALLY sensitive and abrasion resistant too, great for shooting docks.

you can also try this line as well !!! little more easy on the wallet !!!!

Wow! That is pricey. I bought the orange Stren catfishing line but the smallest it comes in is 10 or 15 lbs.

It equals out to the same as 9 spools of 330 yds. @ what ever that cost was per spool. Cheaper by the big spool. I'm still looking for cheapest price nothing is final thought yet. Even @ $6 x 9 = $54 I am going look some more!:highfive

Everything i have is spooled in 6lb vicious .......I did watch a video on youtube a couple years ago of a C.com member who pulls with 6 different line colors, reason was he said makes it way easier to untangle the knotted mess caused by a striper........seems reasonable to me

Dawg, I don't guess that price is out of line if you are SURE you want to go to that color on every rod. I thought I might try 3 or 4 reels first though.:)

I will put it on four of my long rods. Mostly on the long one's on the out side edge. I can see if the lines will cross on my turns. The other day it didn't matter how long of a turn something was bound to cross with the wind as bad as it was. My middle rods have yellow line so maybe that will blend out to be okay! I will put on as much needed to refill the spools with a base filler on my regular line. Or I'll use tape to partially fill the spool. I may even put some on my tight line rods off the front close to the TM. I ordered the suffix 6 pound test Tangerine line Joe mentioned from VanDam Warehouse. 4 / 330 yds. $31.96 plus shipping. Hope it works out for a blind man. :fish

Those orange glasses would fit my image greatly! The result on my experience with orange line is that it ain't worth a toot! nonono It is not very visible on a cloudy day. Wearing sun glasses you can forget it! It may be on a bright sunny day if you are higher than the line and looking down on it, or with a lights at night time. I will use it on the next nightstalk to see what it does with the light reflection and tell you the results from that. But day time it's less than the high vis yellow. :Doh:

Glad you like it, because I can't see it in low light conditions. I'll get to see it under the lights soon and it may standout good in which I'm hoping for. Delbert said he had a hard time seeing it farther out at the tip of the long rods going to the water. 12 footers and down to 8 foot rods. Had three with High Vis Yellow and four with Tangerine Orange. Remember Saturday was all dark clouds for us. So our visibility was not in the best conditions. I will leave it on for a while to get a bright sunny day effect on the line before I change it out. If it don't work out for me, I got you a spool of Tangerine orange!:highfive

I have used the suffix neon tangerine line for years.
My eyes can see the orange better than the yellow.
Fish could care less so I tie directly to the jig.
Of this I am sure.

Orange is easier to see in sunny conditions, yellow in cloudy. Both are obviously way better than clear, low-viz green, or blue. Thats my experiences at least!

Dawg, do you think the more orange line you was looking at to begin with woulda been better than what you tried? I'd still like getting some line I could see better than the traditional Hi-Vis yellow for my long rods. Thanks for sharing your report on that line.

I think there's a REAL greenish green line out there somewhere to try too?!?

I don't know. I gave ofishlbizzness a spool and he said he took it off because of the same reason I stated. I can only say it was dark over cast and that may be the reason. The water was stained greenish color and not a good back ground to start with. I'll give it one more shot day time and one at night to see if their is a big difference. You may be on to something better with the green neon. I know I'm going blind and need glasses but something has to show up better!:Rofl

Ron why not try half your rods with a leader and half tied directly to the line.
To be a valid test each set would need to have identical jigs to the other so you know the jig wasn't why they hit or not.
Lots of folks don't think the color matters.

Ray, the bite is not the problem. I can't see the line above the water line! I thought by splicing it would make it better but I went direct to the jig. We caught fish just as many on the hi vis yellow as we did with the orange. It is just tough to see on cloudy day at the rod tips and back at the water line to keep them separated when turning. It is probably just my old eyes needing glasses. :Rofl

Or go with 50 ft of orange leader,
then
Tie in 15 ft of yellow, for the visible line on the rod and from the rod to the water
then
Go with full orange on the spool!

Best of both worlds
