Gold!

Being isolated from fishing for 4 months due to this incessant winter and hard water, I have time on my hands to think (Dangerous!). Anyway, 40 or more years ago, when we were heavily into bass fishing and crankbaits, Walt & I use to catch a ton of fish on a Norman "Little N" crankbait in GOLD color (gold plate). We use to call this plug our "Little Goldy". Worked in muddy, stained and clear water and became our "failsafe" insurance for when the bite got tough. Seemed like we always caught fish on that plug regardless of the conditions.

Now that we're more (heavily!) into crappie fishing, I have many reliable color patterns to turn to. However, in perusing the Grizzly Jig catalog. I really don't see a heck of a lot of anything in a gold pattern. Anyone know why that is?

If it worked as well as I know it did back then for bass, some gold patterned soft plastics and hardbaits might just be the ticket at one time or another these days as well, right? Unfortunately, I don't have anything in my box right now that is gold! Would be interested in your thoughts Folks. :)

I also have had times when the only productive crankbait was gold and orange. That's a good question. It's even hard to find a hair jig maker offering gold. :dono

Gold is a fantastic color when the fish are on a bug bite. I use gold heads and brown plastics when they are eating mayflies. I used to have some baby shad type baits that were a smoke with gold flake and they worked great, not sure where I got them and havent seen them since though.

Last fall after watching one of "gene's" crappie fishing video's I tied up a gold and chartreuse jig. I had it with me when I went to Stockton lake the next time. Water was clear to a stained green color, sky was over cat. I caught six nice white crappie on that jig fishing an old metal pier, My boat wan't working at the time, in about an hour when live minnows didn't catch anything.

Mid south is now making some tubes with gold heads and orange or chartruse tails that have kinda taken off in our muddy stained water. I’m painting some jig heads with the Disco Gold and tipping with orange and chartruse. I know the bait you are talking about. Arkie has it in the 220 crank bait and I have caught a bunch of crappie on it.

Crappie magnet came out with a couple of colors this year that are gold/have gold in them. Check em out.

Ya know, I may be wrong but isnt the golden crappie a NE thing? If so I'd think that theyd also have a golden fry then correct? So I believe especially there, a gold would be a killer color...just my train of thought. I may be way off base too..

Most "just Facebook" sellers are not legit.. as in they arent registered businesses paying federal taxes, and less likely to be caught on FB. Once you register a domain name you are easier to catch im sure. Your money is safer buying on ebay or preferably through companies that sponsor this forum! Not that they are all scammers on FB, just they arent following the rules and could shut down at any time and are not able to be punished like a real business. Most are good hard working fishermen doing it on the side, but still we should all reward the site sponsors anyways. Im sure if you ask, they can do about any color you see on Facebook.

There is a way to add glitter to the surface of a soft plastic lure: Mend It soft plastic glue. I don't use it to repair or modify plastics preferring a solder gun or candle, but recently I saw a video on YouTube where glue was applied to the head of a grub and then rolled in silver glitter. An optional method using the same glue added it as a clear coat over glitter dropped on the lure's surface.

Craft glitter I assume would do fine and not be affected by the glue's chemical makeup. When it comes to gold, silver or any flashy color, color IMO is in the eye of the beholder. Was it the gold color or the flash that caught the fish's attention followed by the strike? I've caught as many fish on pearl white crankbaits as those with metallic finishes - including gold. But I do like the idea of adding glitter to soft plastics just for the flash quality that may enhance certain action designs and get and hold a fish's attention.

BTW, the lures shown on the sites that sell lures (Crappy Pappy's example) and Caunc pin tail grubs, are perfect tail designs - and I'm not talking curl tail.

Kev, I only posted those baits as alternatives. I’m not pushing them. I’ve been using that product for going into my third season and never had a problem with ordering and receiving them promptly. They’re just a mom and pop shop. Didn’t mean to stir anybody up. They work so I use them.

Check out these gold and chartreuse Slabanator jigs Rodney made for me.

Gold has been a favorite of mine since I've gotten into tying jigs. There weren't any gold color plastics out there at that time, now they're everywhere.

I like gold and chartreuse for clearer water and gold and orange for stained water.

I just made a post while ago on the Louisiana forum featuring some gold jigs I fished yesterday
