Getting things ready for panfish this year, I want to order some small/micro plastics for bluegill. Fishing them on 1/64 and 1/32 heads.
You guys have any favorite colors you could recommend me?

I use a ton of Bison colored Trout Magnets.......black and gold.

Black is almost always good either alone or in combination. White also works well when the water is clearer and I've had some great days with a small white beetle with a red spot in the throat of it. I bought some of the Bison colored Trout Magnets that Alphahawk referred to above last year for the first time. Only got to use them on one trip, but I caught 10 very good sized bluegill with them. Hope to give them more time this year.
I like natural colors with contrast.Often the jig head is the contrasting color when using small plastics.
I try to match baitfish colors for trolling jigs. I use several colors for casting jigs - black, hot pink, chartreuse green or yellow - sometimes solid and sometimes combined.

I don’t know if you guys have seen them but northern makes some plastics called impulse. And make neat bugs like mayfly and stonefly and some other small pastics. I’m going to try some of those this year to. Grab some of those bison. I think I have some that came in a kit I have.

bison, bulldog, gainer, black/green (looks like a catalpa worm), sow bug (new color works good), root beer float (another new color... never used but think it would be good)
And white of course
If you’re ordering I would get some Sow Bug and Root Beer Float. I don’t get too excited over new colors but those are two good ones.Quote:

I second what Alphahawk said about the two new colors. The brief time the waters were clear here back in January I had some good luck on the Sowbug. Hope to get some Root Beer Float soon and give them a whirl. The Bison has really been whacking the Bass here lately, especially the Smalljaws and Spots. Those Northland Mayfly bugs and Lunkerhunt bugs were doing well for me early winter also but the rains came and I have been fishing stained to heavy stained water for a month now. Good luck chasing the fish with Gills of Blue!!

The mealworm or gold is a must have color as well. I catch deep crappie on those sometimes even better than the bison.
Not one for using bright white or black. IMO the best thing a lure accomplishes is getting a fish's curiosity, holding it and provoking a strike. The reason finesse lures like the Magnet work so well is 1. body/tail action and 2. colors that enhance both. Gotta make that lure interesting or the strike zone stays small - something that changes when the right lure is used at the right speed. 100's of colors can work equally for certain lures especially soft plastics, it's just a matter of catching fish to see which work better in your local waters. Here are just a few color combos I can always depend on regardless of lure design:

The most important thing is to not overthink color. A few will do for any lure that has the right action used at the right speed (presentation). 1/64 oz is pretty light and though I use it occasionally, 1/32 and heavier do the trick regardless the depth. JMO.

Thanks. Yes I do sometimes get caught up on trying to pick colors. We as fisherman want an answer in hand when the answer sometimes more is what we do with our hands(lure speed actions, presentation) and location of feeding fish than these lure colors that catch us fisherman.

The nice thing about soft plastics is the variety of colors that you can use, not having to worry which is best or the wrong one once you find colors YOU LIKE.
The colors shown work for a variety of soft plastic designs and this is what I believe:
1. fish notice and are drawn to certain colors. Take the top left one - chartreuse Slider Worm tail and pumpkin/black flake body. I haven't even fished it yet yet I known it will be a slam dunk! Next to it is is chartreuse with green and black flakes. Always works regardless the lure! and on and on...
2. fish attack certain colors used with certain lure designs because THEY MUST! I want to believe the right lure action annoys fish but so do certain colors. When fish sees a lure, the moving object of interest is a big question mark. Lacking intelligence, it's senses become focused on the object, becoming more aggressive the longer the lure is near. Would grape be a color that would work as well as chartreuse/pumpkin? This is where opinion comes in and personal bias dictates my choice. (No, I will not cast a grape colored soft plastic lure.)
3. If you notice, some colors are subtle (black/red pearl), clear tail with pearl body, whereas others contrast more with the environment. There is no rule when to use any color. If the bite is fierce, most any color works; if conditions support a light bite, it's likely any of the above colors, subtle or not, would provoke strikes.
I would never insist any of the above is written in stone, but the more one catches fish, the stronger the personal bias based on years of successfully fishing many waters and catching many species from 20 lb carp to 3" bass.

I know what ya mean. Sometimes I see a color and it calls to me. I know it will work good. Idk what it is but most times it does. I like that pumpkin chartreuse.
I seen a mint color trout magnet on there website. Idk why but for some reason I like that color! Does it catch? Idk maybe, Maybe ill get some and put them to the test.
I have noticed, say fish are bitting and your on some. It slows down, put on a new color bam.. fish. Then it dies and you go to another color.. bam! Like they have a personality and will grab something different when presented.

I have not fished the mint for panfish but I’ve caught some trout on them...

Trout or Crappie Magnet - it makes no difference. Even the Split tail is not the key reason they work but the body/ tail action when imparted cause the lure to waddle back & forth. I make my own but the tail is a solid cone rather than split :Quote:

The design catches everything.
Design aside, no matter what color you chose, it will catch fish using a Magnet and light jig (unpainted of course).
As far as changing grub colors and starting to catch fish again, been there. It could be a renewed hope/confidence in the new color which translates to a slight but significant difference in how we work the lure. It is good to change colors and designs if only to keep things interesting.

There just something special about panfish and ultralight gear used. I been getting into it more and more as I have a little one and there is nothing better to put him on. And he can catch and I can try new things and try to find bigger gills. It’s just fun.
Vacrappie I see the new sowbug color in there. We have lots of sowbugs here in our trout streams. That should be a dandy color for trout also.
You use round heads with those and do fine as compared to using the shad dart head?

Best thing is being able to find hook sizes that fit the lures I'm casting, from the smallest #8 to 1/0 the largest in jig weights from 1/64 - 1/16 oz. The dart heads shown in the box rarely get used.
Yeah I use the basic ball head as well as the shad dart head... I am about to order some of those daiwa jigheads that Alphahawk uses... With this high water I have been doing a lot of buying... lol... I have some little ones they just aren’t quite old enough to fish yet

2 year old and 5 month old... I am sure I could probably take the 2 year old but I’d like to wait a little longer... she is a little wild at times...

My grandson when he was 5 watched the float and even though uncoordinated turning the reel handle, walked backwards when a fish was hooked dragging it on shore.
He laughed like crazy every time he held up his fish.

Like the Trout Magnet in bison color and lime green / black color.
The best soft plastic bluegill bait last year for me was the Lunkerhunt May Bug in olive color. I trim it back so total length I use was around an inch total length. Walmart sells them. Even caught a few big crappie on them and big redear love them too.
Order a pan magnet kit . You will have the top picks in colors .Solid black 1 inch sliders on a 1/32 road runner head is awesome .Quote:

I start out using a bison trout magnet when going for red ears and blugills. If it don't produce I switch colors. I very seldom use red but it has been recommended very highly by Deathb4 Disco so one day I wasn't doing any good and put a red trout magnet on and caught my personal best R E 12 inches so I made sure I have plenty Bison and Red. Thanks to all you guys just to name a few of the ones that has really helped me Alpahawk, Eagle 1 and Deathb4Disco. Also Crappie.com rocks.

Are Bloodworms Saltwater? My grandparents in SC raised and sold Red Wigglers, which are different, but also killer Panfish baits, and red in color!!

I have found bulldog is a good color... it’s half black half red
I personally use black, browns, dark greens and yellows. 2” Curly tails, 1” sliders and rebel grasshopper crank bait are my go to.
