Tinkering in the Shop

After loving M-F's chartreuse powder colorant I ordered some orange and pink and fell in love too. The orange is exactly what I've been looking for. It is more opaque and bright as all get out compared to any liquid colorant I've used. The pink is great too but I can achieve the same results with liquid colorant but still like the powder over the liquid. Guess I need to get the green and blue next. Also poured up some ole reliable colors that being black and chartreuse and a pearl patriot. Guess they were the two most used colors out of my box as I was almost out of both of them. Threw a little blue flake in the black but hard to see. If anyone wants the recipes just let me know and I'll post them up here.

That is purple hex flake with lime square flake. Purple flake ended just up looking like black flake. :(

I know I barely discolored the pearl from a wee bit of too much heat. Crappies won't mind. :)

Lately been hearing you can't get a good body to tail bond without a slider mold. I beg the differ. Stretch test was performed 5 minutes after bait was injected. I say it was a good bond as the bait stretched twice it's size.

Wow! Those powder colors are burning holes into eyes! Those color combinations are excellent. No doubt about your tail welds either.

I believe he has a strawberry colorant that has been on my to do list too. Swear you can never have enough! lol

Awesome colors, super bright. The fish will need sunglasses for sure. Have you tried them in clear water yet? What were the results? Sorry if it is a newbie question, But I am a newbie when it comes to pouring...Thank you in Advance.

I have fished my baits in up to 6’ clarity. Mostly stained/muddy water though. Tell you the truth I’ve for years have stated colors don’t matter. It’s whatever you feel confident in and then getting the fish to bite. Seems like every year I switch color preferences. Last year was black/chartreuse and the pearl patriot. Previous year I used more purple/chartreuse and firecracker/chartreuse. That pearl patriot though I have fished in the muddiest waters and they still hit it.

What mold is that ? I like the length of it

It’s a mold from Print a Lure on FB. Look him up. Not on FB anymore or I’d provide the link. Good think about it is if you need to down size just bite the tip of the body off.

Powder Plastic Color

Yeah FB gets on my nerves. Only got back in to purchase my molds.

Pardon my ignorance, but it seems ( to me ), your doubling your cost with two molds having the tail mold and what I'm expecting a full mold to place the tails in to attach the bodies to?? wouldn't it be easier to shoot the whole thing in one color then cut off where you want the body to attach, or am I missing something here?? I am just getting started myself so if you could enlighten me, it would be great. Thank you

Personally I hate reheats and over time they build up quickly. Using a tail mold cuts down on reheats. With the tail mold I have I can shoot 24 tails with just a sprue leftover. To shoot 24 tails with the 12 count body/tail mold I have I would have 24 bodies and 2 sprues leftover as reheats. This adds up. Back in the day when I poured a lot I’d have several tail molds and would do tail runs meaning I would stock up on several tail colors I use so I could quickly grab tails when needed and shoot a body on. Makes it easier. Another thing it is easier and more uniform to pull a tail off a sprue than to cut off a body.

Ok, Thank you for the reply...I'm Just getting Started and was looking at start-up costs. Might be something to look at down the road, for me anyway, as money would allow. I don't plan on going into business, just make for myself. Having back problems as I do, and unable to maintain a source of income, ( I'm on VA disability and Soc. Sec. Disability ), I have time on my hands a lot, and this would help with the boredom.

That's one reason I got started tying jigs. Yes I know how expensive it can get, but if I keep a level head I think I can keep that under control...Thank you again for your reply.

You’re welcome. When I 1st started I didn’t have tail molds. Once I bit the bullet and bought one I can’t imagine not having a tail mold now and stay away from any mold that doesn’t have a tail mold.

Travis , do u have any issues with the tails welding? I go the extra mile and use a artist brush and alcohol wipe the ends of the tails

Sometimes I do and is because my plastic wasn’t hot enough. If my tails are freshly poured I don’t use school to clean them. If my tails have been laying around for days I use alcohol to clean the oil off that the plastic has secreted. I get my plastic around 360 when shooting a body onto a tail. I make sure my injector is a little warm so that it doesn’t cool my plastic off. When I shoot I make sure I hold pressure. As you can see in the one pic I posted I stretched the bait twice it’s size and tail didn’t pull off.

That patriot color is outstanding. Works great on Grand.

Got a new white colorant from Dead On. Their colorants are weaker than what I'm use to but I like the effect I can get with them. This white is toned way down and 30 drops were used to get this effect. Need to try dialing it back to maybe 10-15 drops to make it more transparent.

Never underestimate the power of a little pearl with flake. Switched up colors of flake I usually use with just pearl and backed off the pearl and added 5 drops Dead On white.

Very well done for sure. It's clear that the jig makers on CDC have some skills.

I really like the tail action that you get from the mo magic mold. How does the tail action from this mold compare?

I have the same mold the Tail election is awesome.

Lovely and dangerous, you got a winner!

This mold is far more superior. It pours with ease and completely 100% of the time unlike the mo magic and the tail doesn’t flip up on the hook and get caught like the mo magic.
