We are headed down on the 27th for our D'arbonne trip. I know mum is the word since Crappie Master's will be in town just days before we arrive.
Can someone give me the latest water temps? Is she muddy, slightly stained, or clear?? If you like to send me a PM instead, I fully understand. Any other information that you would like to share is greatly appreciated. Been watching the water levels, and she is just a bit over normal pool.

A very good Question --- A week and half ago the temp was 50 and we have had several warm days and only two nights in the 30s --- Monday night between 10 and Midnight we got 3 inches of rain... Up Corney way the water is always cleaner , but all the muddy water coming down Middle Fork and the Bone Bayou will get things stirred Up. Folks are catching a few from the Channel edges but the Shad are Vacating the channel for the flats -- Bring Minnows
Lake is a couple of feet above pool, water temp is around 52, water clarity is moderately stained. Anything else just holler at me. We been getting a LOT of rain and wind.Quote:

I'm only seeing a lake level of 81.4 ft as of 08:45 a.m. today. Normal pool level is 81.00 if I'm not mistaken.

Normal Pool is at 80 Feet -- the forecast is 4 to 6 inches this weekend and it will be enough to close the ramp at Stowe Creek and water in the Parking Lot at 33.. There was a Crappie Tourney Monday and I had a Dentist app. -- I stopped and talked to Two men that said those that caught were catching smaller fish on the channel Edge and they did not find fish on the Flats -- Both of them was running Live Scope Sonar

Fellas, not trying to be argumentative, but the lake level website above states that normal or full pool level is 81.00 feet.
We were down there last year right after the Crappie Master's and the lake was very close to being closed down, it was over 83ft.
Crappie Master's has been in town most of the week pre-fishing for the tournament that begins Friday.
I use NOAA by the National Weather service that shows all River Gauges and Lakes on the National Maps -- I dont know how to Post it Here but the Predicted level will be at 82.5 feet on the 25th
FOL, what about the improvements at the spillway. Are they open as needed and how high is the Bayou behind the spillway. Big Muddy still rising so things will be held up behind the spillway for 2-3 weeks minimum. I'm in sola itching to make a trip to the Bonne. Gotta get some warm nights there. Been in the low 70's here in Gonzales. The Corps will open the Bonnet Carre Spillway at Laplace March 8th. The untold story is that the Mississippi River bottom is rising as well as many new sandbars are developing upstream holding the water and when the flow slows, silt is dropping out to the bottom. This situation is breeding on itself. Federal funds for strategic dredging have been reduced compounding the problem. Fact is that this situation is happening without a doubt and with the Corps, it out of sight, out of mind. I can go into factual detail but the biggest catastrophe in this nation's history is developing like NOW.
One tainter gate was already opened, they just opened the second tainter gate today. The bayou behind the spillway is super high @37.5', flood stage on ouachita is 40' so the bayou is basically unfishable. Lake looked muddy today. Haven't been out in a few days sinve the weather has been absolutely horrible, pouring down now and with more rain in the forecast i imagine the lake will continue to rise.Quote:

Darbonne recieves too much watershed for that spillway. The higher the Bayou is behind the spillway, the less water will pass through the gates unless the outlet is above the Bayou waterline. Equal levels equals no flow. To have equal levels is a real crazy reach. Just wondering how these gates flow to the bayou and what is the level difference between the lake and the bayou.
I can tell you for a fact that I've seen the bayou and lake with even levels on more than one occasion. Lake darbonne was built as an impoundment, flood control wasn't even an afterthought when it was built. The original dam and the new tainter gate system is still not enough for a severe rainfall event. It does this every year tho. One thing that I have noticed since the new gate was put in is that the lake stays consistently muddier than before. I was hardly able to get on lake at all this time home with this rain and wind!Quote:

Yeah I think it was built in 63. Lil Darbonne looks to be the source of most of the muddy water. Cleaner from hwy 2 or Corney. If the levels equalize, not much water will be going through those gates. Man that's amazing that this has happened before. Terrell Island must have been swamped.
My Doctor is in Bernice -- I take 167 up there when I pass Lil D'Arbonne and Middle Fork and the water is raging Middle Fork seems to be the Primary source that most of the muddy water comes from
Not sure where mid fork is. It looks like the muddy water comes down past the state park and out to forks ferry. I call that channel Lil Darbonne. I guess it contains water from more than one creek. Thanks for the info.
The Middle Fork and Lil Bone both enter the Lake together at the west end, just west of Gills Ferry.
Thanks FOL. I've never been up there but always heard stories from up that way. I used to fish around Forks Ferry and follow the channel north as it makes a loop and back down and joining the boat lane toward the hwy 2 bridge. Doing this, the water is usually cleaner from Corney as you know. Loved to make that loop in the channel and right off the channel. Darbonne is well protected by the wind and has great habitat for all the fish. The level fluctuations and drawdowns are the only negative that I know of. Some drawdowns are needed for mechanical improvements however. By the way, a few years ago I met you in Wal Mart in Ruston in the fishing section. Enjoyed our conversation because it's not every day that I talk to a CDC icon. Thanks for the info.
I fished the masters this past weekend and man it was tough. Water temp was 54 the previous weekend and was 47 to 48 this past weekend. Fish were on the flats in 12 to 18 ft of water. Friday was a great bite in the monsoon and Saturday we had to work for them hard. The fish were there but just had lock jaw for us on Saturday. We have the new livescope and chased the big fish all over the place hoping to go for a broke on saturday. Shiners, purple/chartreuse, black/chartreuse and popsicle jigs were what we had the best bites on.

We fished 14-17' water in the flats. Caught them with pink and chartreuse jig heads (no pattern) and they tended to favor a jig with some type of chartreuse in it. We ended up finishing 6th. Caught 13 Friday and 17 Saturday. Caught a 2.60 on Friday and 3 others over 2. I'd suggest having plenty of pre tied rigs, as we probably broke off 60+ rigs on trees/stumps... granted we were fighting tough conditions. Good luck
Yall did an awesome job congrats. Yes it was tough. Friday we did good, but broke off 3 really nice fish. Saturday was real tough. We should had not chased the big ones and stuck to what we were doing.Quote:

I had the Opportunity to see the Lake first Hand yesterday.... the water is partly over the old Highway at 33 and water was half way in the parking lot with the docks at the Launch underwater... Any time the old 33 goes under so does Stowe Creek Launch and parking lot --- Lost Goose that Live Scope Fugga Booed you chasing big fish -- they were Buffalo and Goo .. Haw Haw Haw

What a difference one day can make on the Bone. In 20 Hours they have released so much water the Level is 6 inches lower than yesterday.. There is a very strong Current going under the Bridge.. Wonder if everything left to get out of the current
