Battery Charging question.

Replaces my 3 trolling batteries in May of 2018. Bought a new minnkota charger... everything been working as should.

Yesterday I replaced my cranking battery just because of its age and didn’t want to chance being off somewhere and it quit on me.

I have a minnkota charger.. when I went to unplug the charger to start replacing crank battery all batteries were on green light/ maintenance mode.
Unplugged, unhooked cables from crank battery,swapped out batteries, hooked everything back up and plugged charger back up.

This morning I look to make sure everything is back on green lights and now I have bank 2, which is one of my trolling batteries that never got off the 25% light??? Keep in mind all were on green and I didn’t even touch none of them. All I did was swap a crank battery...
not throwing a blinking code... just still on 25% charged.

Anybody got any ideas on what
Could be the issue with this??

that’s just weird. Sounds like something that might happen to me.

Check all connections maybe that simple. Sometime it only takes a little wiggle.

Are you sure #2 is not going to your new cranking battery. Depending on how long the new battery has been setting will make a difference on how quick it will
charge back up to full charge.

I 100% certain that banks 1,2,&3 go to trolling batteries and 4 goes to crank

Put the #2 bank on a different battery and see if it does same thing if it does I’d say u got a bank going bad. I also would check to make sure that #2 bank doesn’t have any corrosion on it check the wire to see if they are broke where it goes on battery

Less than a year old.. just replaced one that was about 3 months out of warranty that minnkota said they don’t repair them they’re a “sealed” unit.

I swapped banks. It’s definitely the #2 bank.
Bad thing is I’m leaving Monday headed to Guntersville.... there’s no way o can ship it to them and them have me one back before then.
I emailed minnkota and I’ll call them tomorrow.

Are the wires on that bank clean and in good shape where they connect with the ring connector ? Are the ring connectors good and clean....are any of the wire stands broken where they connect with the ring connectors ?

I'm told, but have no experience with it, that a boat bouncing around in rough water can damage a battery.

With my charger no matter how charged the battery is every time you disconnect the charger from house current it will tell you it is charging the battery from below the 80 percent state. You would expect the opposite problem because of what they call surface charge where a bad battery will give you higher voltage immediately after disconnecting it from the charger than it can actually maintain. Checking the charge of a battery by voltage is not very accurate because it is a chemical process. I'm fairly suspicious of all of the new fancy chargers. There are so many things to consider such as the ambient air temperature the temperature of the battery itself, how recently it was used, and a bunch of other consideration that a truly automatic process that would maximize battery life would be difficult to achieve. I understand that there are newer battery chargers that take into account ambient air temperature and allow the user to customize the charging regimen. It all sounds like a lot of bother to me. When I was young and poor I float tested my batteries regularly and manually controlled the charging regimen. Now I just replace them.

One thing I think you should do if the battery charger is giving you weird behavior is put a load on the batteries and then recharge them. That way the various problems with measuring charge by voltage is going to be more less of a problem because you will know you are actually charging a drained battery.

All is just like it came out of the box in June of 2018.

It’s doing exactly what my last one did..
I’m so freakin aggravated.... which don’t do any good... LOL
I’m aggravated at myself because I didn’t buy it locally and if I would have I could more than likely get it swapped out and have it back going tomorrow...

Bad thing is I’m about ready to say to heck with minnkota between these chargers and a 2400.00 trolling motor issue they wouldn’t warranty.... bad thing is I’m not sure if there’s anything better! LOL

Dee, if they can’t help you out quickly one thing you can do is move cranking lead over to trolling battery. Say you come in from fishing, plug charger in give it a hour and cranking should be topped back off then move it over to the trolling battery that I not getting charged should top it off before morning. A pain but it’s a work around to keep you fishing.

Leave a day early and got to Eufaula to Johnson outdoors headquarters. It’s about 3-4 hours from the big G.

Are all batteries the same ? Have they(each) been set to a specific battery type ? Precision charger will do them all but could have lost setting .

Yeah. They’re the same. It’s broke. I checked all the voltage on each bank and the #2 bank ain’t putting out....and minnkota couldn’t help with any kind of speedy service.. but they could sell me a new one and ship it next day!!

I have installed a new one and I’m ready to go now.

I’ll send them this one to replace and have 2 I guess!!

Thanks for keeping us up to date. I find batteries interesting for some reason maybe because they seem like something from another age almost. It's kind of like concrete which despite billions in research isn't much better than what the Romans used. You would think in the age of tiny computers you carry in your pocket that other technology would develop a little faster. Why are we still using lead acid batteries and have smart chargers that are pretty dumb and apparently unreliable.

Dee, are they going to charge you to fix the almost new old one that was a replacement?

Honestly I have no idea.. they told me last time they didn’t do repairs on chargers... now I have to send it in to be repaired??? But I can’t send it in.. it has to be sent in by an authorized service dealer

I had troubles with Pro Mariner on board chargers. Bought a three bank and it quit working three months after the warranty expired. Replaced it with another three bank and it quit shortly after the warranty expired. Loved the convenience but couldn't afford it. Went back to the old way.

I have been using a MK330Digital for over 8 years now without any problems....knock on wood.

They will send you a new one. It cost more to fix than replace these days. The Precision model will be an easy sell if you don’t need or want it.

My fuses give me grief. Swap em, cheap to try. Have given serious thought to cutting my fuses out completely.
