Ran into some of that last night on the Big G. I wasn't fishing though. What temp do crappie start spawning? 60?
I believe 55-60 will definitely start pre spawn.
taken from crappie 101 NOTE the water temp should be the one about 4 to 10 feet down not the one on the top 1 or 2 feet layer where most temp gages are measuring as the very top will be warmer always than the near bottom layer :Water Temperature: 55 Degrees
Expect the bite to get more aggressive as crappies begin feeling “the urge to merge” and feed heavily before spawning. Schools of baitfish continue to be a primary location factor as crappies fatten up before spawning. Shallow ditches veering off the creek channel and running toward shallow spawning coves can hold huge fish. Work the creek channel with curly-tail grubs or minnows, keying on brushy cover in the 6 to 12 foot zone. Crappie may be as shallow as 1-3 feet deep along these structures.
Water Temperature: 60 Degrees
Male crappies fan out the nest while the females hang around outside the cover waiting for the water temperature to get a degree or two warmer before moving in on the beds, and now is a good time to load the boat with oversize fish. Some crappie may have already started the spawn if shallower water is warmer.
Water Temperature: 65 Degrees
Spawning should be in full swing now, but some will still be in a pre spawn mode. If you aren’t catching quality fish on likely spawning cover, back off and target pre spawn crappies instead. Spawning takes place on woody cover such as: brush piles, stake beds, etc... in the upper ends of brushy coves and creek arms, in 2 to 8 feet deep, and some as shallow as 6 inches deep depending on the lake's water clarity. Pre spawn fish will be in three to six feet of water, but will chase minnows shallower.
Water Temperature: 70 Degrees
Some crappies will be done spawning, while others are finally moving onto their beds. Keep fishing as the spawn is still going strong.
Blacks start at 60 give or take whites 70 or so.

I saw 2 snakes trying to mate in the riprap on the Decatur causeway yesterday...…
Frogs is hollering ! Some Easter Lilly’s have flowers ,and some forcynthia with blooms ! I know what My note book says about those few things ! :biggrin:fish
Judging by the forecast, the warm water temps are gonna be real short lived...
What fur said, enjoy it while it last. Old man winter is coming back.

Y'all hold on, we ain't there yet. But it want be long before everybody that owns a jig pole will be on the water. Actually, right now is my favorite time, I most always catch the biggest fish of the year in February.

I have read that the length of the daylight hours also has an effect on the spawn as well.

There is a reason the spawn is associated with blooming dogwoods. Thats usually when the days are a little longer and the night time temperatures don't drop enough to cool down the water. Maybe it won't be long boys
I know in birds that their reproductive cycle is driven by day length. Coach, I learnt that at Auburn. I don't know if the same holds true with fish or not. I wonder if fish would spawn at 65 degrees even with only 10-11 hours of daylight? I was a poultry guy, not a fish guy. I'd like to know the answer to that though. Maybe the Googles can tell me.
Longer daylight hrs. Triggers the pituitary gland in fish.....this gland then causes hormones to be produced and gets the fish ready to spawn.

I believe it's all of the above. I've seen the moon ,temperature and daylight and weather kick things off in fish, deer and all God creatures. That's why it's hard to predict.

I remembered that from itchyology class in college.

G, I never took any ichthyology classes but sure wish I had now. I can tell you anything about a chicken or cow that you'd possibly ever want to know.
If we don’t get a break from rain and high water in the delta we will miss the spawn like most years but the fish will be fat from crawfish and other backwater critters
It's 80 degrees here today so my theory is that all the fish will spawn today, and it'll all be over tomorrow when the temps drop to the 40's.
EDIT: Sarcasm intended. The record high temp for today was 73, we were predicted to get to 74. It's 80, or was a couple hours ago.
Im hoping it starts to warm up again from the 16th through 23rd as I will be down there for a week to visit my dad and do some bank fishing from the Big G & Madison County Lake.
Don't know about the moon turning the tides, but I laid a fire in the wood burner!
