Bucktails vs Kiptails vs Feathers vs Marabou for Crappie Jigs and why ?
I like Kiptail over buck tail because it is more durable and a little easier to tie. Can’t tie feathers very good so I gave up.
Man.... don’t give up on the feathers!
They don’t have to be pretty, but a feather will do the job in any situation I’ve found, except trolling, I dont troll.

I use mostly hackle on my jigs. I use marabou on the smaller jigs because the impart so much action in a jig.
Yes Sir I should have wrote hackle instead. My bad!QUOTE=deathb4disco;3768445]First, marabou are feathers. :)
Marabou has incredible action in the water. IMO, only rabbit fur can compare to it.[/QUOTE]
I would keep all kinds available to use. Marabou is my favorite for spring and fall, summer is fine also, but I use more Hackle then. Now I use to be a total non believer in kip tail, but some guys got me to make some and the first couple I made we samples of a head I ended up using. One day I was tired of tying so went down to my bank and had one of the kip tails jigs on. I put it in super close to the bank around some wood and bang a crappie, few minutes male and I had three with the smallest 14". After that I was a believer in kip tail jigs especially in colder water. I don't thunk the fish like to chase fast things in cold water so think the less active kip tail was a plus then.
Rabbit is awesome, but again I wouldn't kill off any of the available materials to try!

Would you say hackle is the most versatile and could be used year round? If not what if any could be used year round?
I like to fly fish in saltwater, and our flies are usually bucktail.
Bucktail has more "body" to it, is tougher (important for toothy species), and is great for baitfish imitations.
Tie this on a jig head, and you'll have a winner!

I have been trying my own Crappie Jigs about 40 years
Tried several different things. Artic Fox tails is by far the easiest to tie with and action is great. Give them a try. You're welcome.
I think they all got their place and time to be used.
