Jig size and loop knot question

We went to Jordan Sunday to start breaking in the boat and to get used to operating a larger boat. I did manage to catch one 12" fish. I was using 1/8 oz jigs with double rig and 1/2 oz weight at the bottom. Do you guys like 1/16 oz and smaller grubs for winter fishing? I had 4 rods out and it's hard to see them with my son playing on the boat so I'll probably try one Rod until he is more content on watching rods with me. Do y'all prefer small loops or larger loops for a double rig? I know every one will have a different opinion and that's ok. Just looking for what works best for you. Thanks again!!

A loop is a loop to me. Smaller is probably less noticeable. Not that it really makes a difference. If the bait is moving it is all about action to me.

More rods increase your chances but its doesn't matter if you can't handle them. To me, 4 to 6 per person is enough unless you've really got a good setup. You can set your rod tips to be close to the water, if you get something on, your tips will usually drag and you'll know it.

I'm not a fan of double rigs, I have no doubt that they work, I just don't like them. I use 1/16 oz. jigs tipped with minnows. 8 rod spread between 2 anglers. The boat is barely moving, so the minnows will give the jigs a little action and smell. (my thoughts anyway) Fishing as deep as we were Saturday (22-28 ft) I use a 3/8 oz egg weight, then tie on a swivel to help eliminate twist. 18 inch leader to the jig/minnow. This helps get the baits down quicker and keep them down in heavy current. We had over 40 fish both days. And most were over 10"

I run double 1/16 with a 3/4oz or if I'm fishing minnows I use 2 gold hooks and 3/4 oz weight. I like about a 1in loop

Do y'all pre tie your rigs and use a snap or tie directly to the line? It gets a little tangled for me tied straight on.

I use trolling weights with built in swivels. Expensive. I like to get my weights back. I run heavier line to weight and then lighter line to rigs.

I told them straight to my line with no swivels. I have tried pre tied but in my opinion it takes me longer to untangle them and try them on then just making them straight on the line

What is your preferred loop knot?

King Sling. Sometimes hard to tie close. Key is to let the line drag off your fingers as you tighten it.

When I make my loops I fold the line to loop size that I want then I do two simple overhand knots. When I tie my weight on I use a PALOMAR KNOT

The way I do it:


Small line for crappie (4-6#) I use a surgeons loop
Bigger leader (10-50#) I use the non-slip loop
50#plus I’ll use a crimp

minnow titelining I use 1 or 2 gold Aberdeen hooks with a 3/4 oz weight on the bottom. This way I can thump the bottom and, in theory, hook less catsfish.

titelining jigs I’ll do a slip weight on the mainline, a small barrel swivel, and a lighter leader to 1 jig, size varies.

longlining jigs I’ll do mainline-swivel-leader-1 jig, size depends on depth and speed.

bobber fishing with minnows I’ll put a slip float on the main line-swivel-leader-split shot-gold hook

i always use fluorocarbon leaders
