curious about best way to fish for crappie in a small spillway i use to fish okatibbee spillway all the time id see guys fish beside the rocks with tiny jigs like 3 feet in front of them which sounds like a strange strategy and that they would be that close to him at the bank when the water is low even
anyways how do you think is the best way to fishing small spillways like that for crappie? since gar is such an issue i guess jigs would b best huh
This time of year most people I see are snagging.
when u say snagging you mean like with a trebble hook in hopes of hooking them in the side? or is that a term for a certain type of crappie fishing like shootin docks lol
Yeah actually snagging them in hopes of hooking up with them by chance. Lose a lot of crappie thru the gates in cold weather during the winter months. This time of year on the lakes I fish the 4 flood lakes in north MS from December 1st thru the last day of February no more than two single hooks (at least 12 inches apart) and no larger then #2 hooks are allowed to snag with, no bare treble hooks. You may want to check your local lake regulations they may differ. I've done it a time or two, two 1/8 jigs tied about 16 to 18 inches apart and try to jerk them thru the water in slack water areas/ eddy's. Some cast and retrieve some walk along the rocks and pull along with longer rods. You can catch a few when the timings just right, just ain't crazy about walking along all those rocks myself.. lolQuote:

I HAVE FISHED THE BARNET SPILLWAY WITH A CORK . BEST TO FIND A BREAK IN THE WATER OR A SWIRL . THE BARNETT SPILLWAY WILL HAVE SOME WHEN IT IS RUNNING . THE BITE IS AN ART TO DETECT . IT IS FUN . HAVE CAUGHT SOME AT GRENADA THAT WAY TOO . GOOD LUCK . SINCE I GOT A BOAT I HAVEN'T BEEN BACK UP THERE .
I have used the jig and cork method below Barnett, too. I usually run a 1/8-1/16 oz jig under a slip cork and just like ole Thump said, work the edges of the eddies where they spin off the main current lines. Crappie will stack up there waiting for disoriented baitfish to get pulled out of the current.

That’s exactly right. In my experience you want to stay out of the main current lines and fish the eddies and slack water. They use those current breaks as an ambush point. I usually start at about four feet deep under the cork and drop it down a foot every 8-12 casts until I find them. If I hit bottom before catching one then I just pick up and move down the bank some.

okatibbee spillways usually around 5 feet up by the rocks so cant go to deep wish i knew how high the spillway is so could adjust
