I'd appreciate some feedback from other c.com members on sickle hooks vs. regular hook shape for catching crappie. What do you use and why is one shape better for you. I use a 32oz. jig head. Thanks for any info. as I have used both. Curious how others feel.
I don't believe the fish can tell the difference and they seem to work the same to me. Lately I've been a fan of litewire hooks as they bend and come free from structure, not sure if the sickle hooks come in litewire.

32oz jig is heavy af most of the crappie I catch aren’t 32oz
In all seriousness, I like the red sickle hooks just because they seem cooler. No real practical reason.

I switched to Sickles years ago and never looked back. They almost always hook them in the roof of the mouth and when fishing brush they will bend and come out. Just reshape it and continue fishing.

I like the sickle hooks better also. In my mind I think I get snagged less.
I can't really tell if there is much of a difference in hookups. Weedless sickle hook jigs are my go-to, with a thin wire style weedguard.
What is important, IMO, is that the hook point is higher than the eyelet. If it isn't that way from the factory, I bend the hook out just a little. I feel like I get better hook-ups that way, and it also makes it easier to push the hook out of the fish.
Sickle hook is preferred but use others as well. Seem to get better hook up with sickle.
Starting pouring my jigs with sickle hooks last year and never looked back. Seem to get better hook ups but there’s no telling really [emoji23]

I have been using both for a couple of years and didnt think there was a difference with the sickle hook. A couple of weeks ago I broke off and tied on a sickle hook. I noticed then that all the fish I caught were hooked real good in the roof of the mouth. That day made me a believer in the sickle hook.

I have been using sickle hooks for a while now. I seem to get a better hook up with them.
Definitely sickle hooks. 1/16, 1/8, 3/32, 3/16, 1/4 oz
I use both but given a choice I will go with sickles every time. They are much sharper than J hooks.

I prefer the sickle but if you paint your own jig heads don't waste your money buying the red ones because the red will just burn off.

I use both I really like the number 4 gold when pouring but also make them using sickle. It is a great jig for dock shooting sliders or other smaller bodies. I've been using #2 sickles when I want a bigger hook. For walleye I use normal gold #1 to 2/0 depending th size of the jig, tbe normal bend works better if you are tipping it with a minnow. Find one you like and have confidence in then stick with it, advice I dont follow because I like experimenting too much when pouring jigs

I prefer sickles when I'm shooting docks or casting versus fishing around brush. When I'm fishing around brush, I go with light wire so I can straighten them out instead of constantly breaking off.
