Finding brush on SI

I've played with the SI some on my Striker 7SV, but haven't had much success finding brush with it.

What settings should I try? Seems like things are a little clearer on 455khz than 800, so I leave it there. I can see bottom contours and trees pretty easily, but brush piles don't seem to show up that well.

How sensitive are these units to interference? The 7SV runs on the starting battery. My outboard is older and I don't believe it has resistor plugs. Any chance these could be hindering the SI?

I run Garmin alot has to do with the unit. What I would do is put out a brush pile. Go back and look at it on your side image and try to duplicate it.

I changed the color scheme from blue to Amber and that seems to help.

They're still really subtle on SI though. I've been running by piles that I have already found on 2d and am getting an idea of what they look like.

If I can get good at it, I can scan a 200ft swath, instead of just a few feet on 2d. Should make finding them way more efficient.

I run a different brand unit, I have a 10" screen. The most distance that I run my SI at is 70' per side, 140 total. I would think most brush piles would show up really small or not at all set at 200' and a smaller screen.

I have a striker 7sv also, Does scanning both sides vs only scanning the right (or left) side have any effect on the clarity, sensitivity etc. Also I have noticed that that there is a lag in structure showing up on the screen. Example; moving along, scanning a pier structure, the transducer will be even with the first posts of the pier but will not see any indication on the screen until the boat has moved forward 5/6 ft. Does distance from object have an effect on the size? Will a 10' high brush pile located 10 ft from the transducer show up as the same size as one 40 ft from it?

I have a different brand, Birds.
However I scan up to 125 per side when hunting on a new lake.
I have a 12” screen.
For me it took a while, to get so I could recognize a BP right away.
Also the harder the bottom the less the brush pile will show up.
The shadow is what you are really looking for or the school of fish.

Seeing is believing. So put a brush pile where you know you can find it for sure. Then travel back and forth at short distances till you know what it looks like. Then farther distances so you know just how far and what setting distances work best on your sonar.:twocents

I'll try that, thanks. I leave it set to Auto and it changes automatically. Typically at depths that I'm searching around this time of year it goes to 94' on either side.

I don't believe scanning one side or the other is more detailed. You may find that one side is clearer than the other because of an obstruction or turbulence in the water.

As for the lag, you should be able to change the scroll speed to better match the boat speed. Mine has a little, but not bad.

If you didn't know, when you see something you like on SI, push the left or right buttons, move the cursor over to it, then push the waypoint button. Open up the map screen and you can go right back to it, then pick it apart further with DI or drop a jig on it.

Does yours have the ferrite choke on the transducer cable? My 93sv came with one.

I run my Helix -9 at 60 ft. per side as a rule but never over 90 .

My Garmin 73sv picks up everything.
Make sure your depth settings are correct.
