West coast Gulf update

Although it was gratifying to see the 70 degree water temp yesterday(16* bump from Friday), there were a host of other factors to contend with in yesterday's challenging excursion. The 20 - 25 mph Southerly winds had provided an unwelcome mass of eel grass to impact effective lure presentation. The white-capping day had discouraged all other launchees but I had high hopes of another day to remember with the beasts of the brine. It didn't take long for the species menu to escalate with the acrobatic antics of the poor man's Tarpon=Ladyfish being spotlighted most of the day. Estimated around 2 dozen aerial shows of the Ladies, tenacious Lizard fish, pinfish, Trout, Reds, punishing Pompano, Flounder, Gar all made the day worthwhile although gale-like winds, wet hazy conditions, weed strewn game field tested my skills. Caught a nice amount of trout(kept 5 up to 18.75" w/3 more keepers released), 2 undersized reds, umpteen Ladyfish, plenty Lizardfish, 1 decent Flounder, 3 nice Pompano(1 was a true tackle-testing Hog!!), 1 10-12 lb Gar to end the day and his, lol.

Pompano is something I've never tried to fish for or caught incidentally, keep talking about giving it a whirl.

You've always heard that if bluegill got much bigger you'd have your hands full= Pompano are that × 10 and incredible on the table. Check out the price if you are able to find em fresh!

Your wearing them out Doug...the Pompano bite is picking up on the east coast as well, a guy at work went to a recent club meeting for off-shore fellas & stated a "Pomp" guru spoke of techniques, including the statement the direction they go when hooked is a 95% chance of where the school is in that area, thought was kinda interesting...

Jeff- ??Don't know about that one?? I'm far from a qualified, paid(do it for a living) fishing/underwater photographer expert, but my comeback for that= most specie are buddies/buds/bros/wassups(schoolies), some even hang according to hatch(size) class. When we experience uncharacteristic pain(eg. Black nickle,sickle 3/0) in the roof of our yap) often times, gauged on our pain threshold, are prone to do a little "happy dance" or even appropriately a "yappy dance"). Now, stay with me, if you are of the more manly/tin hut/key holder 7/24 gym-accessors(Pompano)...they are leavin town and guess what...their buds are goin' to! So, when these pomps got pedal to the metal for 6 - 10 minutes and are now at the gunnel awaiting for deployment of the safety net, guess where the location likelihood of the other gangstas is...under the boat! I've seen videos of guys chucking tandem-rigs for trout and catching 2 @a time and although I'd buy popcorn :popcorn to watch someone battling 2 3lb. Pomps on med. light trout tackle, I'd bet retirement money that they are either a Hanes underwear commercial employee or a stock holder!! (Clean-up on aisle 2)!:yikes

Jeff, I think I'm done with this soap box now. Wait, one more thing, you belong to a club that has professional guides giving tips/secrets = I'm filing a protest(Slab?)!!nonono

Great day and post! I live on the Gulf coast but in Pittsburgh right now visiting family and "enjoying" the 30 degree temps lol. Can't wait to get back!

For those of you who may be a tad skeptical of my continued upgraded opinion of Mr. Pompano, let me show you how genetically blessed both fish/we are in checking out the following recent filet session shot- Take notice of the section behind the eyes up to nostrils of the prime backstrap(hunters know what I mean) strip not available on most fish. Shouldn't need to say more, except for my now recurring dream of catching one this size!!Attachment 323747Attachment 323746

Just casual talk at work Doug(related to your recent catch), them off-shore guys have deeper pockets then me= no club affiliation....I'm happy with the humble "niche" I live in the in-shore & freshwater world. Should have added (1st move/direction) after Pompano being hooked...as told 2nd hand to me:dono.....we'll have to settle it over a "cold one someday":biggrin
