Gen 2s going on sale !! get ready you know they go something good coming out! :banghead Just bought a unit back in the spring I should’ve know something would take its place!
The only way to stay current in the fishing electronics world is to upgrade every year, ifn you can afford it! Me......at my age I'm staying right where I am 'cause you'll never be up to date!! I'll still be using the Gen 2's when they're dinosaurs! :dono
I'm a late adopter to new technology. Still running the legacy series, 895 and 899.
I was planning on upgrading to the Gen2 10" units until their competition came out with new gizmos. Now I'll wait and see what happens. I suspect in 5 years things will stabilize.

What's H'bird doing? Running behind and playing catch up! Wish I'd have gone with Lowrance or Garmin to start with instead of Birds....
Grass always looks greener on the other side . lol!
I went from HB to Lowrance a few years ago as the Lowrance was supposed to be "all that and then some" and after using it for a while I was not so impressed and wished I had not made the switch, went back to HB and in my opinion is where I belong for my uses.
Not knocking Lowrance or any other brand just HB is what seems to work best for me all the way around.
I learned that sometimes when something does pretty much everything you want it to do you may be better off just to be satisfied and sit pat where you are.
[QUOTE=Dirt track;3722553]I bought (3) Mega 9’s in May. I’m hoping they come out with a transducer and software I can use with the unit I have now
Sorry but the new mega+ Gen3 transducers won't work with your mega units you bought in May. Software upgrade won't be coming as they boosted the internal hardware to increase the power needed by new transducers.
You can always sell your Birds and move on to one of the units you mentioned if your not happy. I agree with "the grass is always greener" statement.
HB still has best side image, their DI and 2D are hard to beat with some of their newer transducers. Livescope looks good if your fishing for tarpon or swimming humans. Haven't seen any real good videos using it crappie fishing that make me get excited about what it shows, just my 2 cents.
Everybody I fish with only use Lowrance. But then, it is my boat.
Birds rule. Gen 2 will keep me going
i think 46 yrs ago my first was a Vexlar then Bird super 60, then also bird super 30, then later LCD’s,,,big move during bass tourney days and chasing salmon in the 80s was Lowrance X-16 paper graphs, there were other makers out there,, back to humming bird, the Lowrance a few times, but I have to say, for clarity, bird mega GN2 is the best I ever seen. I have had the itch for while to get a 360 as not into the video type aim transducer and I just like seeing up front all around and what I have left behind. I know it’s not perfectly Jin clear, maybe hummingbird will upgrade by first of the year. Birds over the years have definitely ruled and Tom Mann is da man!
That’s Hilarious CP!!!

Got a new boat coming, and will be looking at Humminbird's new G3N units. No way will I buy another Lowrance; I've had SW issues with my Hook2 that Lowrance isn't bothering to fix and CS has given up, and BBC Lowrance forum is full of folks with SW issues right now.
Really looking forward to these new units. Gonna be my shot for a used G2N unit :cheers2,
JD1 I'm seeing lots of Gen1 Helix units going up for sell, haven't seen very many Helix Gen2 Megas yet. Guess we'll have to see how great these new units are as compared to the gen2 mega to see if many people feel the need to upgrade. Prices really dropping on the gen1's, have seen them selling for $800 or less.
To each his own I had to get a HB g2n when I got my ultrex and I much prefer my g3 lowrances.
YouTube 1.5 bobby Garland Baby shad jig, 10 inch crappie.
Thanks Roy but I'm really wanting something to network with my HB 899. Really have no interest in purchasing a hub to network. I'd be happy with another 899 if the price was right. Whatever I find will only be used for DI with my ulterra but need it to network with the console. Story of my life to spend so much on that ulterra and THEN they come out with the upgraded transducer.
Mistake on my part when I said I would be using it with DI. Actually it will be with 2D on the US2. Looking at the new Helix 7 DI G3N. Does it have 2D compatibility with the US2?
Wow, another Internet Expert dialing in on something he knows nothing about.
My fishing buddy and I run his Livescope on our boats (a portable setup) and it is excellent at what it does. We can steer around fish holding areas easily keeping on the fish no matter the direction from the boat. Seeing fish under docks is amazing.
We fish pushing jigs and it is extremely helpful seeing both the exact jig/weight depth but we can actually see fish come up and hit the jig. Or watch them come up, investigate, then swim away. That's where we start trying other color combinations until we find out what they want instead of what they ignore.
Instead of making snide remarks about Tarpon and swimming humans, you ought to actually learn about the units.
Tom
Internet expert, wow that's funny! I'm glad your happy with Livescope. I would love to actually go with someone who has one on their boat to actually see one in person.
I love learning about units, that's why I use this forum. I have yet to see but a couple of videos that actually show me any images of crappie swimming around structure in 20+ feet of water. Most videos I've seen show much larger fish than crappie and yes several show humans swimming. Glad you are enjoying your livescop. I'm enjoying my Helix SI Mega, the fish may not be swimming under a dock but I sure can see them. To each their own. New technologies will keep coming, some we will like, others are not for everyone.Attachment 323581Attachment 323582
Hey internet expert, I'd like to catch a tarpon as big as that crappie you're holding!!

Hold it a bit closer to the camera. It will grow before your very eyes.
Tom
That still is one heck of a nice Crappie, and I am with you my Birds do everything I want them to.
My buddy is adding a Garmin unit and Livescope this winter to his Bird set up, I can't wait to see it in person from some of the videos I've seen, this one is very impressive.
YouTube
Greenwing, thanks for posting that link. By far the best video I've seen on the Livescope. Looks really great on this video catching perch, I'm impressed!!!
The forward view to me does not impress me but that video of the realtime down view with the perch is a totally different ballgame.
I still think as far as telling what structure is what the mega imaging Birds with SI and DI give the best picture of structures or what is laying on the bottom.
But the "video game fishing with the Garmin down view although is awesome where does the line get drawn to keep fishing more of a challenge and even more of that question when you are talking about where should the limits be on pro fishing tournaments to make it not the best electronics but the best at fishing and figuring out current patterns of the man holding the rod that makes the difference?
Also that unit in the video which is a 12" screen display list for 3699.00 dollars and just a quick glance about 2749.00 on line street pricing so can you actually compare that to a 12" Helix mega which the brand new unit yet to be released is showing a list price of 3099.00 and is still priced 600.00 less for a brand new model just now being released model and the current model mega 12" is available for a street price right now of less than 1700.00?
Down view looks good but sure is high.
Jim,
Hope your doing well. You need to post some images from your units and some of the fish I'm sure your catching. Hope your enjoying your retirement as much as I'm enjoying mine. Merry Christmas!
It would of been interesting if he would of had DI up and I wonder what Livescope looks like in rough water where the boat is bouncing around. I am so used to using 2D to jig with that is a toss up but the weeds now that was outstanding as the weeds were not very thick.
I have seen Roy in action along with his budy GeneC. The two of them have three pound crappiest each. As far as the birds are concerned I had the others, they were ok till HB came out with SI. They left them at the dock. I have a 899 on my console a Helix 9 G2N on the bow. Both operate flawlessly. Looking forward to a Helix 12 G3N this spring. I will be replacing my 899 on the console. But I think that the real key to all of this is do you re as lily know how to use your units to the fullest. I know that I am still learning. T_OM this is a place for friendly conversation, swapping of information, Roy is as great guy (except his Packers hat)(Go Bears). He has as wealth of information to pass on to all of us. I know first hand as GeneC taught myself and my step son a few things.

Been fishing on the days the wind cooperates. This lake has a lot of underwater trees and I am starting to learn where the trees are. The fish here now staging in our creek mouths with timber. Longlining is the ticket down here. Roy this lake reminds me of Keer. The fish here are really nice. Last thursday I brought home 12 that were 12 to 14 inches long. Man do they fight hard. Hope you have a great retirement and keep in touch.
Tahoe 50 thanks for the kind words. Allot of nice people on this board for sure and I've learned allot from them, Gene and Jimb just to name a couple. Jim show us some screenshots of the trees your fishing as well as the fish, good to hear your doing well.
Oh and Tahoe 50 your a nice guy as well except for liking Da Bears, lol.
My Packers are stinking the place up pretty bad this year, time to regroup.
Me and Gene made it out today, only caught 10 but one of Gene's was another 2 pounder! My HB showed us right where the fish was holding, Gene dropped a jig on her head an bam!,
Merry Christmas to all!!!!
Congrats gene on another 2 lber. Hey Roy, if I buy me one of the mega units will you and gene teach me how to use it? I want some of those 2lbers, haha. Are y'all fishing Buggs or Gaston, 9f both? Good luck, and Merry Christmas to you also.
