One big headache

Got an I pilot PD V2 and a 787c2 mounted up front. Turn on TM and bird goes crazy. I've asked this question before and got the answer to hook up to separate battery. Finally ran 3rd battery with power wires on the other side of the boat and it's still doing the same thing.
No transducer hooked up, wires ran on other side of the boat from trolling motor power wires, separate batteries, and I'm still getting the same thing. Any suggestions now? Attachment 320271Attachment 320272

I would highly recommend to put your boat in the water before you come to the conclusion. Water adds a grounding element that is hard to duplicate out of water. Not uncommon at all to have rfi out of water but then clears up when on the water and vice versa.

Two questions, where is transducer and does the power wire that plugs into back of unit have big knot in it right behind the ducer plug in.

pull the top off the trolling motor head and check the fuse in there. its probably blown. if it doesnt have the fuse in the head. run a ground wire from the skeg to the negative post on the battery. be sure to put a fuse inline. it looks like you got the transducer cable wire tied to the trolling motor wires. separate them and see if that helps. do you have a onboard charger? some onboard chargers use a common ground try unhooking the ground wire off the trolling motor battery.

Transducer is not plugged in and no on the big knot of power wires. Only about 12" of extra power wire ran.

It has not been in the water since I added the 3rd battery but it did the same thing when it was hooked up to the same battery as the trolling motor. Will try to get it in the water this week

I had the very same issue as you with a 597 on the bow. Transducer was mounted on motor. I disconnected ducer, dropped motor so I could turn it on. While running motor I move ducer around and away from motor. Made no change. My power wire was like yours which is original. I called Humminbird and told them my problem and asked about getting the updated power wire with ferrit ring installed. They sent me a new power wire with the ferrit ring installed. Installed that new power wire and that solved my problem. Might give that a try. Sure can't hurt anything. By the way if you decide to run motor out of water just run it on low for short period of time then shut off for a bit so it dosnt get hot. Uses water to keep motor cool.

you can purchase a ferrite ring at any Radio shack or at a electronics store !!! also at walmart !!!

After looking ferrite rings up, there's about 9000 different kinds. Any particular one to get? Rings, clamp on, megahertz? Do they all just do the same thing or are the specialized?

And as luck would have it, go to radio shack and pick up ring, go home put it on and unit won't come on. Take ring off still won't come on. Bang bang bang my head. Think my unit has called it quits. Even hooked it up to my power cord from my Helix and it still didn't come on. Welcome to my life.

Narrowed this problem down a little more but I'm still stuck. Got ferrite ring cord from humminbird and still didn't fix problem. Narrowed it down to the transducer. Tried 2 different transducers and they are both doing the same thing. Have the cord away from the whole unit but when I touch the cord to the motor housing or even put the clamp against the housing in getting interference.
Put the cord in a rubber hose and wrapped the motor housing in a rubber innertube that I cut into a long strip and then clamped the transducer to the housing. Still making rf noise on my screen.
I can hold my transducer an eighth on an inch away and it will stop as long as nothing is touching the housing. Same with the cord. But I can touch the bottom fin with the transducer and it's ok. Changed out the armature in the motor, same thing. Even tried rotating the housing just a little and same thing.
Any thing else that anybody know of?

sounds like there is no ground on the motor housing. one ground from the motor housing goes thru the shield of the us2 cable to the sonar where it ties to the head unit ground. The other ground is fed thru a 3a fuse in the tm top housing and goes to the tm battery ground.

Take an ohmmeter and read from the tm housing (clean connect to metal) and negative of tm battery. You should read near continuity. Continuity = 0 ohms. You should read some small amount of wire resistance.

I forgot to mention to also run continuity check on the shield. You should read continuity from the tm housing to one of the pins in the transducer connector. I don't know which pin, so check them one at a time till one reads. If no reading to one of the pins, you have a problem. Somebody gotta have ground.

The ground to head unit and ground to the tm battery is how the start battery and the tm batteries get tied together. Without this path, you get garbage because the signal has no reference point.

I think I understand what your saying, but where would the transducer ground to the tm housing? Should the transducer not ground to the depth finders ground? And then that would run back to the starting battery? Not the tm since it has its own ground. Should they not be as separated as possible?

the shield is tied to the tm housing internally. the trolling motor ground is tied to the tm housing internally thru a brown 18ga wire fused 3a to the tm ground wire inside the tm pwm control module. If the us2 is connected to the head unit, this ties the tm battery to the crank battery.

Some folks run an 18ga wire with a 3 amp fuse between the tm battery ground and the start battery ground. This wire accomplishes the same thing as the 3a fuse and wiring as I previously described in normal operation. This 3a in the tm housing has caused many headaches, especially tin boats.

when you operate the foot pedal power switch, a relay in the pwm module places power ( +12 or +24) on the positive brush and the pwm circuit pulses ground to the - brush. Brushes are isolated from the TM housing.

Did you check the fuse in the tm top head cover?

This is stuff to easy check. May not fix anything.

Bad connections could cause similar problems, so could a bad transducer. Too many to list as a possible cause.

I’m guessing you are using a tm version of transducer which is supposed to be more shielded.

my comments were concerning the built in sonar (US2).. Ignore me if this in not what you were talking about. I didnt see a transducer on ur tm picture, so I ASSumed.

I'm surprised you didn't notice the tm cane pole. This is blue ball old PD tm with a cane pole box located just under the shaft. No it doesn't have a built in transducer. And the wiring is a little out of the ordinary since it does have one of your little inventions. Lol

I know this tm. Does the box still work? It has nothing to do with any sonar, only steering. No pwm involved either, just reversing polarity back and forth on the steering motor from the I pilot board or the foot pedal, whichever selected.

Again, I did not notice a transducer mounted on the housing, so I explained how the US2 is wired. Can’t remember crap anymore.

Pithon, do you have a ohm meter? If you do try this, clean a spot on motor housing and pull head cover and remove fuse. Read for continuity from fuse lead going to motor and to motor housing to see if you got continuity. Sounds almost like that wire could be broken loose where it attaches to housing.

With my lowrance hds unit i had a 2d and a lss-1 and never had interference.I think Humminbird makes a trolling motor transducer because when you use there regular transom mout tranducer it usually has interference.

Lol Got a buddy though that just got a new Lowrance unit and I'm supposed to install it on his boat this weekend. Might put it on mine first and see if it does the same thing

Yeah they're the tm transducer pucks. I've got to check the ground on the motor housing like cane said and then I'll go from there. That really makes the most sense to me. I think I'm just gonna run a ground from the housing all the way to the battery and see what that does. If that works then I'll start taking it apart to run the wire internally

I don't know yet. I think I may have found something. Ohmed the motor to the negative side of the battery with a hard wire and it made a difference. So I'm gonna run a wire on the inside up to a ground in the head of the unit and see if that works. Sorry as to not give any results and thanks for checking. I've been kinda busy with a dog on her last leg. Finally put her in the ground yesterday and now I'll be able to tend to my boat.

dont use the large power and ground wires in the head unit. they are not ground. these power leads have switched power and pulsed ground signals. will cause problems.

hmmm apparently he didnt run a wire from the skeg to the negative post on trolling motor battery

Safe place to tie to ground will be at the terminal where the ground lead from the battery plugs on the power control circuit board. Meter from this point to motor housing to verify continuity. 18 gage wire should be plenty. Don't take much. Without the housing grounded, the housing is nothing but a noise generating antenna from the commutation of the motor brushes. EMI and RFI.

Take it to a Minn Kota authorized service center and have the internal ground installed.

if tm dosen't have us2, then it will not have the fuse in the top cover. fuse was us2 only. if uwas closer, id help ufix it.

tm are simple machines.
