What pound mono did you use? I know Richard Gene suggest around 40# but I was thinking heavier. Gonna make some of these myself if I ever go somewhere to get the mono....lol. :Rofl
They look good.
Let us know how they work for you. Been wanting to make some since I saw his video but keep forgetting to buy the mono.
I would try and angle the mono a little closer to the hook point. When you drag that jig over a small branch, the jig will turn on its side (or upside down) from the weight of the hook and that much gap may allow the branch to get "inside" the guard/hook point & cause you to hang-up. :twocents
I bought some 50 lb to try this myself. Looks good to me!
You guys try this out and let me know if it works good before I buy my mono.....lol. :Rofl
Will do dave. I plan on getting out this weekend. I had some mono i got on sale for some jug lines. Cheap is what does it haha
So heres my 2 cents on my doing. Same setup as the richard gene video. Bit i ised 50lb mono i dunno what brand, im in bed and not getting oit to look BUT!!!!!!!! Dave you said you had thought about using heavier than the 40 he used. I say no!!! The weedless worked grrrrrreat as tony thentiger says but a 100% weedless jig is junk if it has a horrible hookup ratio and thats what i ran into. I kept getting bites from sand bass and could not set the hook. I eventually had enough and trimmed it back to maybe weedless and infinally got one. And lost more and cut it off completely and from there i hooked every one that was interested. I dont have 40lb mono so im going to try the 20lb i have and see how that does but ide say the man knows what hes talking about using 40lb. The jig for hangups was awesome. I got wild with a cast and got it in a willow and came through the mess awesome. And plenty of brush sunken. Weve had alot of rain so keystone is still high so it works but ide go 40lb maybe lower?
Hmmm, thanks for the update. Case of more isn’t always better. Thanks
Man I hate to hear that lower lb. may work better, (good to know) but I bought some cheap 50 right after the Richard Gene's video came out and have just not gotten around to tying some jigs up. I was going to try it on some hand ties. Let us know how the 30 lb works out. I was thinking that RG said he used 40 or 50 if he had it laying around.
Just watched Richard Gene video again. He says 30-40 lb line.
How To Make Your Own Weedless Jig Heads That Will Increase Your Crappie Catches - YouTube
I think if i could have angled it more it may have folded easier on the bite but i couldnt manipulate it to sit angled more so maybe if you get that worked out it will work. Once i put a body on it the angle got oushed up and didnt fold well so ill see if i have 30 i know i have 20 ill let ya know what happens when i get out next. Prob be some sand bass i try it on. Im on the bank till march ish
Wonder if you went up about 1/8” or so then bent towards hook. That would hopefully allow for the bait on the hook.
Well here is my two cents on your trouble and I have made a weedless head or two in my day....lol... So here goes, the angle on your guard is way to steep like Crappy Pappy stated. When a fish flares its gills and pulls your jig in, the guard hits the roof of its mouth and acts as a post. It holds its mouth open and keeps it from closing,so you just jerk your jig right back out without a hook up. To get a better angle on your guard you NEED A LITTLE HEAT!!! Don't burn it in to but make to where you can bend it a little toward the hook point. When it cools down it will firm back up and you will be back in business, with the angle close to the hook point and it will bend when you set the hook. But I would go with 40lb or lighter....and it will take some practice to get it right but it will work. I did it about 15 years ago and it worked then....lol..I hope this helps...you know my two cents and $9.98 will get you a cup of that high dollar Joe that is run thru a cats bowels...
Hahaha yes! I was throwing the idea around of trying one and using some heat to mend the line. Ill ask every fisherman i see for 30 or 40lb mono “can i have a few feet of mono?” Just a few is all i need hahahahahahaha
