Curious to why folks tip their jigs with minnows when pushing? Why not run jigs OR minnows? I can see the appeal as far as having the minnow for the flavor on the hit but why not just run minnows? I watch a ton of vids and it seems like a lot of the guys that preach jigs still tip with minnows. Im not biased. I’ll used what catches fish regardless of technique or bait I just like to understand the “why”.
Scent, vibration, larger presentation, natural forage for a predatory fish. I will run straight minners on some poles and jigs and or road runners tipped with minners to see what the fish want that day. Crappie are visual feeders and some days they want color or flash mixed in with meat and other days they want just a gold Aberdeen and meat. Some days you can catch them with straight jigs or pony heads, certain times of the year you want catch me in a boat without minners though, no matter if they are needed or not.
I like to tip jigs with minnows.....you dont have to keep checking to see if your minnow is knocked off....a lot of times I miss a fish and he either gets the minnow or knocks it off....then another one hits the jig. You are never wasting time running a bare hook this way.

Sometimes the bigger profile of the jig and the minnow makes a difference too.

Sometimes they like jigs w/ minners, and sometimes they like straight minners....they're pickey! You have to adapt and overcome!!
I don't use minners when I'm "Pushing" .... just jigs .... but I know a lot of guys around here that tip their jigs with minners when they are Spider Rigging !!
What jigs do you recommend to push? Style and size wise.. I’m really gonna try and get better at using jigs vs relying on minnows so much.Quote:

If depth allow me I will use double. Either minnow on top and jig on bottom or double jigs tip with minnows. The fish will tell you what they like better at the time. If the bite real active I will just use jigs.

The minnows I'm able to buy run small and usually when I reel a minnow back in it is dead (bank fishing), will a dead minnow produce?
If this dead minnow is happening in the summer, it's usually a sign your minnow is below the thermocline with little to no oxygenated water, i.e. fishing to deep. I also bank fish right now as I am rebuilding a boat I purchased, and fish with a bobber/ float to keep the minnow in the strike zone for a longer period of time. I also found that by using a longer jig pole, I can lob the minnow and float farther with less effort and thus not rip the hook from the minnow or make them hit the water to hard thus killing from impact with the water.Quote:

Larger profile and more wiggle and scent would be my thought . I used to tip a lot back when I was learning how to jig well . I don’t use minnows now but to be sure they can be deadly on a jig for large crappie .
Lots of the tournament folks use them with great success .
Yea I watch a lot of tournament footage and see this method used frequently. I do like the simplicity of just a jig and will continue to work on that skill. If you are tipping, do u use smaller jigs or just whatever jig u have on at the time??Quote:

Haven't used minnows in years and years pushing jigs. And our catch rate has actually gone up.

I never do it, it's one or the other... 90 percent vertical jigging or long lining. I guess I would if I liked to slow troll. Guess if you're after money fish I see an advantage.

dead minnows in the summer also happen because they go from the COOL water in the bucket to the WARM water in the lake and die from shock.
My brother-in-law and i have this same type of discussion going on 10 yrs now. He believes that every panfish lure going in the water needs to have a wax worm on it. Same idea different bait i guess.
