I just read an article about c&r states that it's more harmful than good. I catch and release bunch of fish I hate to think that what I do is harmful to the fish. I always been taught don't keep the first fish and if it doesn't make a fillet let it grow
What's yalls thinking

I tournament bass fish and fully support catch and release of bass for preservation of the sport, and have caught bunches of previously caught fish, when bass fishing I do chemically treat and maintain my live well water which in turn renders the fish non edible for a while due to the catch and release chemicals. Crappie over the minimum length limits, legal to posses for consumption also get special attention from me for catch and release. I catch them fillet them, release the side less carcass to the wild, and then ultimately release the cornmeal covered morsel of meat into hot grease.
I would like to see more details on these studies. They are a little vague. Maybe after the studies are complete, they will be published in a pier reviewed journal and the details will be more apparent. In my opinion, catch and release has a time and place but shouldn’t be a hard and fast rule that should always be followed. On the other extreme, it wouldn’t be good if everyone harvested everything they caught every time. As more research is done on species that anglers predominantly catch and release (ex. black bass, trout, striped bass) I think we will learn some pretty interesting things about this practice.

Well, I did my fair share of "catch and release" on Lake Conway this morning. Lost count of the ones 10" and under. Now I'm releasing the ones I kept into hot grease. Water temp was 68 deg. Won't be long now!!

The article was printed in an English newspaper. Their "anti fishing" groups are worse than ours.
We caught lots of short fish at Sardis this summer that had been released one or more times judging from the holes in their mouths. They seemed to be still feeding aggressively to me.
I've caught the same bass in the pond behind the house several times. In the last 5 years I've caught the same bass well over 20 times

I’m curious, what is y’alls opinion on C&R LMB and C&R crappie? It seems to me that there has been a bigger push among crappie anglers (especially tournament oriented) to preach and practice C&R.

On Lakes that have a minimum size Limit I think there should be some Le-way where Gut hooked Bleeding fish are concerned. 100 out of 100 will die. why make the person throw it back in the water to feed the Turtles
turtles need to eat and it keeps it honest, otherwise the cheaters would just rip the gills on a short one and keep it.
I am not buying that, Bass for sure. Crappie caught by Cranks is another story- during the summer lots of crappie do not make it. Torn lips, mouths & gills do a lot of harm. I see dead shorts floating all the time during the cranking season- I crank but try my best not to hurt the fish, removing the many hooks in them. I found that using braid line almost guarantees rip out gills. I is sad to see so any floating when a bunch of fisherman are cranking! PS-I went back to mono for the stretch.
I think lakes that receive a lot of pressure and smaller reservoirs should practice C&R by anglers who fish the lake a lot. Not sure why, but most people think it's a unwritten rule that they must keep every legal crappie they catch. Lakes that have a population problem is a different story. Once I have enough fish in the freezer then I tend to throw back more than I keep, especially on the trophy lakes. In MS, Grenada receives so much fishing pressure it is unreal, but it still manages to produce big fish every year though, but for how long? The size has diminished over the years with the amount of crappie anglers now, not to mention the guide services and clients and out of state anglers. I don't think it will be long before we go from a 15 per person creel to a 10 person creel, which I would support if it came down to it. Keep the fish you NEED and throw back a few for seed, conservation is up to each individual in my opinion.Quote:
