On a day when I was giving the crappie a break, doing a little wading in the creek, I hauled in this little guy. Not sure but think it’s a longear with his “gimme some” colors on. Please correct me if I’ve got that wrong.

Definitely a Longear !! It's what my Grandpa used to call a "Redbelly". Used to catch them quite often at Herrington Lake, usually on crickets or "horseweed worms" (stalk borer larvae).

We used to catch them in the small creeks here too.The colors are amazing.
yep looks longear to me ….fun lil rascals to ….rather aggressive for their size for sure

It's my go-to creek cranker when I don't care what I catch, just seeing what's out there.
That is a beautiful fish. We do not have many in our lakes, wish we did.

We call them punkinseeds.
That is one nickname they've acquired ..... but, actually there is another Sunfish known as the Pumpkinseed, which has a different set of coloration patterns & a shorter gill flap that has a spot of red on it.Quote:
