My son has been wanting to go cat fishing so last night we went. He pulled in this fish. I’m thinking a gizzard shad. Anybody else have any thoughts.

Yep .... Freshwater Drum !! Or what some people call a "Gaspergou".
He's a fisherman now. :ThumbsUp
You don't get your card until you catch a drum.
A quick drum story....If you cut into the area of top center, behind the eyes in a drum you will find 2 "stones". I say stones for lack of a better description. On small streams/rivers about dark ,on a quiet evening, back when young and my ears worked better we (the family) could actually hear the drum grinding the stones in their head. This story is not a whopper(or BS) but a real fish story....
Also Thanks to CrappiePappy as I had not ever heard of the name Gaspergou
The more you take your son fishing the better person he will be later in life......
Yep a drum or we call them, goo (short for gaspergou)
My father-in-law told me that story while fishing on the Ouachita River probably 30 years ago and I laughed at him. Next drum we caught, he cut into its head and got the stones out. Looked like dull white quartz crystal coins about the size of a quarter.
Anyway, nice catch for your young man. They pull hard! GTT
Rum pum pum pum, me and my drum
Yes you can hear them rubbing the stones together if you are in a metal boat. I always wondered if it was for mating. I have a lot of those rocks. Thought they might make some cool jewelry.
Great catch little man!!
