As crazy as it sounds quite a few retail stores have the same policy. Lowes for 1 will only allow their security employees to stop a thief. Early morning hours I had to stand by and watch guys walk out with generators on carts as they said good morning and walked straight out. Policy was to ask to see receipt. They laughed and walked right by. Crazy as can be, but thats policy. Cant question money either, no markers at register and cant even hold to light and look for strips in bills. All that said, if it were a firearm, I would have lost my job as well. Glad to be out of the retail world again.
This is what is wrong now days. Bad people have all the rights(the right to steal and the right to get away with it) good people have no rights(no right to stop stealing nor the right to keep there job by doing what is just right). What is this world coming to? This just gives thief's more knowledge how to get away with stealing from more stores. All I got to tell Academy Sports is "Just do what is right" and hire this good man back.
:hesaidAfter too long working in retail, which I left over 20 years ago, this is true. The repercussions of an injured employee or “customer” (insert thief here), are much larger than the loss of merchandise, which is insured. Now, assume you stop and prosecute. The employee will be required to attend the trial, which will be postponed at least once, after the employee has shown up as required. Then when the trial actually occurs, it includes many cases, which requires the employee to wait in attendance, maybe all day. Finally the time arrives, the employee provides one or two sentences about the incident, and the case is bound over to the Grand Jury. The company is paying him for all of this time. Now, if someone is injured, well now you’ve got lawsuits over injury, possibly death, how you have violated this piece of scum’s rights, etc.
It stinks, but this is common policy, even though my opinion is that the employee was a hero! My money is on him getting his job back.
I hope some executive that runs a company in his town recognizes that he will be a great asset and hire him!
Come on Academy!!! This man is a hero and could have prevented the thief from murdering! I have spent a lot of money at Academy over the years as you have great prices and awesome customer service but now I have to reconsider. BUMMER
With all the news about school shootings and gun in Florida, the store is OK with a scum bag stealing 2 guns that will be used in some crime later. This world is going to **** in a hand basket and it is going fast.

Alright! I feel better about this store for rehiring this good man for sure.:twocents
My understanding was the store manager fired him and when corporate HR found out the whole story he was rehired. I also understand the store manager was fired.
I don't shop at academy I am so glad they closed up here where I live. Ask them for anything gun related they acted like your a murderer as far as fishing gear ha what a joke. Ive heard a lot of people have good ones but the one here sucked. Me I would be looking for another job and leaving that place. Wouldn't trust them.
I hope they paid Mr Crouch any wages he lost after Academy's stupid manager fired him. They have a hero walking among them. I'm glad they fired the firing manager.
that's nuts. I get policy but a gun and ammo is something you cant let someone steal. Idc about your policy. The dude made the right desicion 100%. He may have saved a life with his actions! And I am very pro 2nd amendment for the record.
