Would love to see pictures of brush/structure you took crappie from. Hopefully will shorten the learning curve for and old man. Been finding fish ??? on my new helix but nothing in the boat.

One of my better screen shots, but unfortunately I did not return to it or mark a waypoint on it at the time. Wouldn't really have done me any good, now ... since the unit I took the screenshot on is defunct & has been replaced.

Image was taken on a Lowrance Elite 5 DSI .... current unit is a Lowrance Hook 7
Other than this one screenshot, most "fish" show up as white dots on Down Image screens. Down Image is all I use, even on the Hook 7, because I'm mostly looking for submerged brush or Shad schools ... depending on how I'm fishing.
Here are 3 more. Craplie on bridge pilings. Crappie on a deep rockpile, look at both side and down image as compared to 2d image. And crappie under a floating dock. Hope these help. Unit = Humminbird HELIX 10 Mega.
Not the best image but I kicked myself in the butt for missing this as I went over it. I didn't notice it till yesterday when I was going back through my scan.

Thanks for sharing the shots.....
These are cool! I don’t think my Lowrance HDS typically gets shots quite this clear! Every once in a while it will look crystal clear but not real often.

Fish outside the water column are hard for me to locate.
I need to get some better pictures now that I have more experience on Mega units...
Fish on pile in center are crappie.
don't make fun of me.....the brush pile and the fish on the left.....is that the view from the above perspective..in other words if I was on top of that brush pile looking down on it.....Thanks for the great pic...nice feesh too....and I do not own a side scan but I might one day...
That's from a side perspective. The brush is the same from left and right image but that pic favored being over it and more to the right.
This was a helpful video for me when I was trying to comprehend how it worked. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNucS1bniIw
Here's another good video of SI perspective ...

Rickie
IceNitro I can see the fish in center of screen but should I also be interested in what ever it is at top right corner of screen?
Thanks or both videos.
The SI image was for you. Top right looks like a few bass to me because they are long and skinny. Top right; notice the shading and water column narrowing. That tells us the brush that is casting the shadow up there is on a gradual drop off... Finding the right imaging color for you will help you be able to see fish easier. There is no one size fits all ; its individual preference. What Helix do you have?

Simple sensitivity adjustments like the ones shown make a considerable difference in what you can see... that's not to mention the basic screen brightness adjustments that an be used in conjunction with sensitivity and contrast
Thanks boy's. Those are some great shots.
Thanks for posting to all. I’m enjoying this.
Me too, always good to see what kind of images other are getting.

Those descriptions are flat out awesome! I've seen them several times, each time I see something different. Thank you!
Here is one of my better shots from yesterday with the Helix 9. Nowhere near as good or clear as some of the previous ones from other members. I just can't seem to take enough time to adjust when I have a pole in my hand.
Attachment 308861
Will do the next time out if I can keep the pole out of my hand long enough. When i see that pile of fish, I’m like a kid on Christmas morning. Thanks Rickie

I found this spot back in early August. I've fished it four times since and every time it has produced a fair amount of fish in the boat. I've found some other spots within 200' of this one but I can't seem to get them to bite.
Attachment 317941
Awesome shots I am still learning, so when you guys are driving over this spot how do you get exactly back over top. Do you throw a marker out the back where the finder is located. I have some brush piles located but I struggle getting back where I think I should be. I am only running a Helix 5, screen is small and using glasses so that is part of the issue also.
thanks
I'm thinking this may be my issue getting over some of the other spots I marked with fish. I guess I could bring a designated pole with a weight on it to cast and look for the structure. I think my best bet is to slow down and focus more on trying to get on them once I see them below. Maybe throw out a marker so I have reference and kind of float around with my lines in the water till I get some hits.
This spot above has a couple of stumps sticking up so I can easily tie the boat off to them and drop straight down with my 14' poles.
Yes DEFINITELY use a marker bouy. Drive right over your waypoint. Watch the pile show up and as SOON as the entire pile is on the screen, throw the marker at your transducer. The pile will be on the OTHER side of the marker. I couldn’t stay on piles either until I started using a bouy. You’ll increase your catch 1000%!

Go into your settings and turn your Current track ON -- that will place a line on the map of exactly 5 feet of where the Boat has traveled --- get back on the same line and the Boat will pass back over the same area - then throw the Marker and you will not have to hunt, scattering and spooking the Crappie -- you might have to close some window to have the map show but getting back is more important. then you can close the map and turn on the Down image or 2D or what ever you prefer
