I went crank pulling in Crowders yesterday, first time I ever tried it.
All went ok accept I kept getting nailed by kitties.
One broke a rod, ( I had sort of repaired before) , another broke my line , 6 lbs P line.
I was running 6-8 ft deep.
Is this normal to catch lots of cats pulling cranks?
Oldfish said it would be great out there but now he owes me a 12 ft rod [emoji102]

I catch catfish from time to time and I’ve had to net a few. I use 8lb test. The only fish I have had a problem with is Garfish.

I know from experience here in Florida there are times and situations when catfish are, in large numbers, higher in the water column. It could be the dissolved oxygen content, possibly barometric pressure, water temp, time of year, etc.. One time a friend of mine and I were going to fish for crappie and discovered hundreds of catfish within a foot of the surface, that day the landing net was all we needed for a fish fry supply.

Cats will bite cranks all year. When I pulled on Hartwell I would start a hour before daylight and always caught catfish while pulling. Have caught cats on the cranks on every lake that I fished while cranking.
As for line I used 10 pound braid. Never had any break offs but have had a few spool offs before I could tighten the drag. Either cats or stripers

I pull cranks all the time on Wylie. The catfish are real pests. Used to pull 6 pound test but had to switch to braid with 10 pound leaders to keep the cats from breaking off with my plugs. I have trolled other lakes, but the catfish seem to be worse on Wylie. The cats aren't as bad in early spring when I catch a lot of big crappie. Some colors the catfish seem to like better than others and I stay away from those colors. Pink and red seem to get quite a few catfish bites.
The cats should be in post spawn right now too. So their activity will be picking up the next couple weeks. I've caught several before trolling cranks. I've got two "trolling rods" for cranks and both have 10 lb test and are only 6' rods. One has a Zebco 33 and the other an old Diawa baitcaster that has enough drag left to turn a cat. They are fun to catch on light tackle but they can sure tear your stuff up too.

Don't leave home without em. Glad you did catch some. Had same luck this a.m. 9 cats. A couple dozen perch. Two green carp and five crappie. Had one monster cat but he liked my bait more than me. I guess 18 to 20 from what I got to see. If had an extra hand could have netted it but ... The big one that gets away. Hope to get back out next Monday for a short.
