Clearing the mind.
Fished from 0630 to 1030 today, and hoped to relax and go over a few things in my mind. I was granted my wish, in a very good way. I hadn’t even dropped in and was disconnecting when an Owl landed on the street light by the ramp and started conversing with the one that was already on the pole. For twenty seconds plus they went back and forth in a way that neither I or the other gentleman at the ramp had ever seen before. It was quite a show. Pulled out the fly rod and a cast or two later had a small gill coming to the boat, and I hadn’t even fired up the outboard yet. This would be a good day indeed.
I motored back to where I spent time last week and just tried to get the fly rod to deliver but it wasn’t the tool for today. Picked up the 6’ rod I used last week and never put it down. Ittybitty swimmers and itty bitty slab slayers did the job along with a taste of Slab Sauce to make them more interesting. It was early when I arrived and had a front row seat for the gator serenade. Many spoke and were responded to for about 30 minutes or so until the sun rose above the treetops. Then they settled into their normal grunt here and there. I hadn’t been fishing long when the drag slipped on a fish, and the first Warmouth of the day went into the box. He would be the one with the bottle in his mouth in the pic.
I didn’t keep count exact but I’m sure that I caught at least a dozen Warmouth, 20 gills , and at least 25 Crappie. The ones in the pic were the stars of the day though others would have kept. I saw no other boats where I fished and by the time it got hot I was ready for the house, feeling relaxed and having achieved what I set out to do. A few pics from the day to share with you and a wish for a day like I enjoyed today. Til next time....Skeet

The little lizard in the pic was close for almost ten minutes and all fish were released and are waiting for you whenever you get the chance to go.

I wonder what the owls were saying , trying to be friends or enemies ? Were the same species ? Big owls or lilz ?
Sure love them big war mouths ...nice read bro

That was my question also. They never got closer than say 4' and both of them were sounding off. They were good sized but had no flat faces. My best guess is that they may have been barred owls. We have a lot of them in this area, and living only 3 miles or so away we have a good bunch of them around the house too.

Good post and pictures, skeetbum. In that one pic I think I see your secret to landing them on the Slab Sauce, I never tried trolling the bottle. lol

I think I can come closer to understanding what those Owls were saying then most people today.
Out on the water is the only place I feel like myself . Where I can hear myself think.
Sort of like the words from a song by David Lee Murphy
" nothing but the cottonmouths and the copperheads....and for some strange reason...I fit in "
Or Shakespeare " Now my soul hath elbow room"
-
Doggone, I have always been outside. Both work and play. My cousins all say I “ just need more space” than anyone else in the extended family. Elbow room says it right.

I can picture you now Tim. Sitting underneath a Big Old Tree, with pen and writing pad in hand. Your canoe is at waters edge, and the open pit has a fire cooking the day's catch in an old cast iron skillet. The tent is up and the stars are just starting to show, nothing to hear, but the sounds of nature.:ThumbsUp

Marv, that sounds like someplace I'd like to be. The way my schedule is now, I'd probably have trouble staying awake for the first few days. Thanks for that visit, I sure enjoyed it.
