I started pulling crank baits 2 yrs ago and have never lost so many as I have this year, 13 so far to snags and mostly to garfish. Ive been using 10# mono and thinking of switching to a braided line. Are any of ya'll able to save some of the baits using braid, thinking I might be able to streighten the hooks when hung on a snag by pulling it loose. The teeth on the garfish is another problem with mono. The diameter of 20# braid is close to 10# mono, is that overkill?
I run 30 lb braid with no problem. Don't get hung up much on our lakes because of lack of cover. But it sure helps with them gar and catfish. Around here our biggest problem is catfish wrapping mono around and cutting with fins.
After about midway into second year pulling cranks I switched from mono to braid. I had a very significant reduction of lost cranks. I still lose some but nothing like with mono. You need to keep a section of broom handle or dowel rod with ya to wrap braid around to pull hung plugs. This will keep the braid from laying your hand open. Don’t worry if you forget, you won’t ever again. I promise. nonono

I switched to braid as well - 30lb Depth Hunter braid with a snap swivel. I use the same setup whether pushing minnows, cranking, or long-lining.
I hated braid, and still lost cranks..usually the snap, or O ring on the bait gave out..It also really wraps around rod tips. Is hard to untangle, and hooks get caught in it..I pull with 12# Stren Hi Vis, and loose very few.
40 lb braid for me, been using it for a long time and loose very few baits, 40lb is the same diameter as 10lb mono

20# hi vis braid for me. Been using it for years.
30lb power pro and lose a couple cranks a year.I target structure alot when pulling and would go broke without it[emoji23].Another yhing i have saw with braid is when youbget hung up and finally do break it if you go back alot of times the crank is floating and you can scoop it up with your dipnet[emoji4]

Used both pline and braid. I liked both but braid will wrap itself around air..... then will not let go...... pline was good.... easier to untangle.

Thanks for all of the info looks like I'll be switching to braid. Who has the best prices on line, I will be looking for 3 different colors so when I get tangles it will be easier to untangle. Thanks again Chip
If your loosing them to fish it's prolly just them cutting the line.... I was running into the same thing so I just tied up a bunch of two foot braid leaders fast snap on one side and barrel swivel on the other! Works like a charm

I bought a bulk spool (1,500 yards) of power pro #40 Hi viz yellow for around $120.00 from Cabela's. Went with 40# because it's the same diameter as 10# mono and was easier to calibrate my line counters. This is my first year using braid, pulled cranks a dozen times with and love it so far, I will not be going back to mono. I lost several 2# plus fish along with the crank baits due to break offs with mono as well as a planer board. Also, it gives you the confidence to get in whatever fish decides to bite your hook, you have to take your time and watch what your doing and learn the tricks to untangling your lines, Cray taught me a neat trick and works well if you have just a little patience.Quote:

Reese, your gonna have to teach us that untangling procedure.... Could have used that a few years ago when pulling cranks at Enid with braid. Crossed a ridge East of Chickasaw Hill and tied into 5 hybrids at same time. I was alone... You know how that went.
I was wondering that myself, I see a pair of scissors in in my future.
I don't understand tangles, here is how I avoid them.
Gibs' Rules To Crank By ( I like NCIS)
1) Short pole short line, I pull 4 off each side. 18, 14, 10 and a 6. Rule is the 6 footer has the shortest line, let's just say 25 foot, the next one is 35, next 45 and the long pole 55 in this senerio.
2) Never cross a line till the fish is on top.
3) Never start reeling until the fish comes to the center, running off the sides gives you about a 20 foot gap in the middle to work fish in.
4) When targeting a certain depth adjust with rod height instead of line out. In other words let's say 55 feet back is nuts on, I run my rod tips as close to the water as possible. I weight the short pole, 10 footer is on the water at 55 back, 14 footer is raised up off the water at 65 back and the 18 is raised higher at 75 back. I NEVER RUN A SHORT POLE WITH A LONGER LINE OUT THAN ONE OF THE LONG ONES AND I NEVER RUN THE SAME LENGTH LINE OUT ON 1TWO RODS ON THE SAME SIDE OF THE BOAT.
Some times 200 series baits comes into play too.
5) Keep a good pair of scissors and be willing to cut.
I have very few tangles and I'm not saying this is the only way to do it but it works for me.

Why would it have been gone with mono? Last time I checked, all my reels have a drag. Y'all act like we have Bluefin tuna or sharks in these lakes.smh
I run a different color on each rod. When you get a tangle and you will get a tangle it makes it easier to pick out.

Oh yeah and a good thing I do, that carp last summer took 150 feet of line before I gained any ground. Better use the drag right with the braid or you'll break some rods.
