I've always gone with the tested and proven military option: Permethrin spray. I use it on all my clothing (good for 1/2 doz. washings) and 90% plus DEET lotion for my ankles, neck and face. I don't get bothered much.
There is discussion in the Mississippi board about gnats and remedy's
Ya'll may not be talking about the same variety of gnats. Long way from here to Maine. Plus we have 4 or more types.
If it's the ones that attach your eyes bite and leave big knots on you they are terrible.... skin-so-soft has worked for me.....
I agree with the Permethrin. It is expensive if you get the real thing- but good stuff.
Here is a link to a net that is worn over your hat. INEXPENSIVE. :twocents

Plane ole Vanilla Extract. Go to the La. board and read the post on Gnats.
Uhhhh did you catch any crappie??
Tea Tree oil is what they use in GA. At least Papasage and crew. Stinky stuff but works.
Dryer sheets and a "he" dog.
Attachment 303006this is what they look like up close. anything with vanilla flavoring will keep em off of ya. skin so soft is what works best for me just don't go in a biker bar after fishing with that stuff on ya.....might not come out so good.
So Im assuming these are submerging larva and they will grow up and go away or do they sitck around the rest of the year?
Cigar!
Avon Skin so Soft or a Thermacell
WOW, thank you all for the replies. How would you use the vanilla extract, wipe it on or spray it on? I can't use deet. I will try Skin so soft.

Below is a link to what should be a fairly trusted source concerning mosquito's anyway.
I am one that rides the Sawyer Permethrin and Off Deet bandwagon as insect repellent as those have been proved to be effective.

The vanilla extract can be poured in the palm of your hand and rub on face and neck or put in a small spray bottle. Something else they use down south is Victoria Secret Amber Rose Perfume.
Buggins Natural from Amazon.com. Contains vanilla, mint, and rose and I mix a dash of deet in mine. Good for about 3 hrs then spray more on. I have a bottle in each car, the boat, the porch, and one to carry.
ANY el cheepo Vanilla scented body spray or body mist will do the trick. ANY. I use whatever Dollar General or Family Dollar has to offer. A few sprays around the neck/ear area and maybe a spritz under your cap bill if you need. Promise you the Buffalo gnats will be gone. Been using this stuff for last 5 years at ball games, fishing, etc. Started with the extract but it is unnecessary and inconvenient. My wife uses it at the b'games too. If she's happy with the results, trust me so will you be.
Thanks folks- I really appreciate it, now off to the store.
Honestly IDK. I rarely have a problem with them. When I used to fish Ky Lake with my late buddy they were certainly something to be reckoned with there. Didn't know about this stuff back then. 60 mph down the lake to blow them out and they were waiting for you whenever you stopped it seemed.
LMBO!!
Now, let me chime in here real quick ... I posted something about this a while back. Are you talking about "Biting Midge" or just plain gnats?
I went to the lake a while back, and I guess some came home with me, but man ... my fiance got bite so bad at night. Ok, so this is what WE found works and doesn't work (at home anyway). That Avon So Soft stuff didn't work. She still got bite. Apple Cidar, red wine vinegar, repel, deep woods off spray ... nothing worked.
To remove them from the house, go to Wal-Mart and get the fly bag trap. Works like a charm. Smells like an od sock that's been out for a week, but it works. Caught all of them in 2 days!
As far as on the water, I don't have any problems except at night. Use red head lamp instead of white and that will help. Are you night fishing or day and having issues? If it's night, just use the beacons on the tip of your rods and turn the head lamp off. If daytime, just thermacell I guess.
I've never heard of Vanilla Extract working though. That's a new one.
Adnyes, regualr gnats bite too. Some say they don't but look it up.
