Low profile bait casters with thumb bars....reason, when fishing shallow with 14 ft poles....you can let the line out easy as your bringing the fish in and its easier to get the fish in the boat...or the net.

No 2 days are exactly alike. Weather, wind, depth, speed are all factors, water color, and on and on. Most importantly is what the slabs want on any given day whether it be minnows, jigs or something else. Find them then let them make your decisions. I use underspin reels because of the convenience. No messing around opening the bail on a spinning reel. Just my preference. My advice may be crap but it works for me. Good luck.
I use nothing but Thumbar Baitcasters for the reasons G listed. I'm more comfortable with them because I have used them all my life. Yet if you watch tournament shows you will see that most use spinning reels and strip line with left hand. But big thing is they have a net person netting their fish. Fishing by my self I find thumbars much easier to one hand line out and net with other hand.
I tend to agree with you guys but nearly everyone iv seen uses spin reels and a YouTube video I watched about setting up to spider rig said never use bait casters but didn't say why.
I think a bait caster would be more useful for letting out line to land a fish than stripping it off against the drag of a spinning reel
I like the cheap fly reel styled jig reel. They're very narrow, light and I can fit 8 rods in a 12 inch rack. You can also strip line from them with ease. Now if I was fishing 30+ feet of water, probably look for something else, but for spider rigging with 14 footers, they work great for me.
I've fished with both and I like bait casters much better and agree with the thumb release when fishing alone.
I'm on the baitcaster side myself. I started off with spinning reels up front and learned quickly they don't work well in shallow water. When you have a 14 or 16ft pole up front only running 2-5 ft down, bait casters are a whole lot easier to pick up and just thumb the fish down.
I like bait casters as well, now. But wind the clock back several years......if I looked at a baitcaster it would birds nest.
I think the best spider rig reel is the one you can get used to or are most comfortable with.

So far the census seems to point to bait casters. I cant believe as many spinning reel guys are there are out there someone hasn't chimed in.
What is the name brand of thumb bar baitcasters being used? And model number?
A lot of the guys use Shakesperes or Quantums....shop around you can find them for anywhere from 16 to 24 bucks.

I just switched to baitcasters this year from spinning reels. I like them so far. As said, it is a lot easier to let out line. I got Quantums from Grizzly Jig at a good price.

I have several of these and they work fine.
Question to all y’all using bait casters. It seems like most trolling rods are kinda set up to favor the spinning reels. Idk what rods y’all run but did y’all notice a difference in the spine? Or the feel of the rod? I ask bc I bought some 16ft ACC crappie Stix and I wanted to try bait casters after asking this same question on here a few months ago. I put the reels on my new rods and it just kinda felt off. Like it was stiffer and didn’t have that normal bounce feel to it. Took em back and got some spinners.
All you had to do was turn rods over in holder with the bait casters. I have used several different brands and haven't seen or felt any difference with Baitcasters verses spinners. Also I doubt seriously those long rods a spine aligned with the different sections like you would find on a good quality bass rod or high end fly rod.
I use spinning reels but I also mostly fish depth around the same length as my rods. I never thought about the baitcaster being easier to let line out when fishing shallow but it makes sense. I've just used spinning reels since I was a kid so I guess I'm used to them.
I use spinning reel, and I do agree that it's harder to land fish when fishing shallow and 14' rods. That's the only problem I have .

I like to used bait casters when spider rigging there no casting involve. Like to use spinning reels for long lining more easy to cast.

Baitcasters on all of my 14ft Ed Duke Southerns!
Hello : I also switched from spinning reels to bait casters. I buy reels that have a thumb bar and flipping switch . With the flipping switch I can release line with the thumb bar and just release the thumb bar and the reel is locked in and ready to go , no turning of the handle to lock it in . I buy high quality bass reels . They have great drags . I buy them on E-bay. Brands are Diawa , Quantum , Shimano and Abu Garcia. I pay $15.00 to $25.00 apiece including shipping Last month I bough 2 brand new Diawa reels, that were old stock , a Triforce-Z 153A the other a Procaster -X153i V . Paid $44.00 total for both to my door. I want good drags as I have caught Walleyes to 8 lbs , Catfish to 10 lbs , Bass to 6 lbs and a 20lb. Buffalo . Good Luck . O - R
Bait casters for me, easy to operate and easy to stow.
I use $10 spinning reels for my spider rigging. I did use the fly reel looking reels but they are so slow to reel in any line I don't care for them at all. I almost never open the bail on my reels, I just strip the line I need as I count how much line I'm wanting to fish. They are a bit more cumbersome to stow for highway travel but really not that big a deal to me. I'm using 12' rods & generally fish 20' or less but this is my first year rigging and still learning.
Im gonna be the odd man out here........Zebco 33's.
I use Daiwa underspins ... and cut the trigger off real short ...
I like the rear drag ...
Rickie
I can see where you guys that use the zebcos and Rickie with his underspins could also long line jigs with the same rods and reels setups. Just change how you rig and tie a jig on or by using a snap. Do you people that use your baitcasters on your spider rigging setups, long line jigs, with the baitcasters?
I don't really "Spider Rig", but mostly "Push" jigs ... and would have no qualms about long line trolling with the long rods/baitcast reels I use. And in fact, I sometimes have 40-50-60ft of line out when Pushing with lighter weights & higher speeds.
Many people that Push more often than other trolling methods, are using Line Counter Reels (essentially baitcast reel w/length counter) and they can easily switch over to Long Line Trolling.
line counters works real good for us. on 14ft pst's
