Missing the Whole Spawn

Rebuilt the engine last summer and it hasnt been right since. My boat has been in the shop for the past 3 weeks now. Every time I get a date to pick it up it isn't ready. Been like this for the past couple weeks. Wont idle without fast choke pulled up and have to push it down and slam it into gear with throttle to get it to run. Once running top end it smoothes out with full power but I wont have it like that. Always seems to be flooding when at low speeds. Mechanic says the oil/gas is getting by rings so he's re-honing all 4 cylinders....again. Makes me scratch my head.....but he's the mechanic...not me. Anyway....now I'm being told Wednesday (my last day off for yet ANOTHER week) and it's forecasted to rain that day.:(

Wife is telling me to just buy a new motor so I can enjoy myself. I tell ya...I'm really tempted but they don't give those things away.:yikes

I certainly feel your pain. I had experienced something very similar with a 115 Mariner I had. It turned out to be a simple, inexpensive fix. The timing got way off some how. I watched the dude fix it in less then 10 minutes. The motor performed flawlessly after that.

I would think a simple leak down test would determine if that was happening. I believe I would look for a new mechanic. Sorry you're sidelined, and I wish you good luck with the motor.

Hate to hear your dealing with motor issues Butch. Hopefully, they'll get you up and running before long. I think the fish (atleast on Murray) are in their annual funk. Fish are shallow and the ones that aren't won't half bite. Thing should pick up before long though and I'm anxious for the post spawn bite. Hope you get out soon! I hate that for you man. Sounds like that problem could be as simple as a bad stator.

I feel your pain Butch. Hate you are having so much trouble getting the motor right. I’m at the point of just waiting to buy a new motor as I’m sick of the older ones.

Butch BEING sinkermaker and Jig Pull said new motor, this was Monday on the Hill kept 28 stopped at 3;00 had 122mile drive had a flat on boat trail still got home and cleaned fish before dark

Ain’t got but so much sand in our hourglasses....get you a Japanese four stroke OB. It’ll last your lifetime, prob without issue, and you’ll never look back. From experience I can recommend Honda and Suzuki, with Suzuki being my current choice (been running strong 15 years). And they make em in white too!

Sure do like my Suzuki. Go for it bowman. Aint nothing but money !

Tohatsu makes smaller Mercury motors (up to 60 I think) and some Evinrudes up to 25hp/
I was also told that the Tohatsu motors over 60HP are made by Honda. Never know anymore who made what. All seem to run well though.
My choice was strictly economic. The Tohatsu 20 I bought was $1000 less than a Yamaha and weighs less too. Not knocking Yammys, I've had 3, just couldn't justify the difference this time.
I must admit though, 4 stroke, fuel injected computer controlled like car engines sure makes for a smoother running and more economical engine than anything I've owned in the past.
Hey, there's your answer Butch. You can save enough in gas to pay for a new motor. Not saying how long it would take but the more you fish the faster you save.
I'm sure there is a flaw in this logic but it works for me.

Thanks for all your thoughts guys. I appreciate all your comments. I'll give my guy time to see what he can do then possibly find somebody else to take a look if need be. The motor was rebuilt last summer and is strong running when W.O.T. IMO the motor is fixable so I aint in too big a hurry to go dropping thousands into another one just yet. Brett, it's @ a '93 model Johnson V4 90 hp. I'm just antsy to go fishing is all but I do have some other things I'm trying to get done around the house and in the deer woods too. I aint just sitting twiddling my thumbs. HA!:)

Sorry to hear about being grounded. I suspect my motor runs fine but I've had very little chance to use it. I was in Kentucky when we hit the 80's in February (and well-meaning friends blew up my phone sending 'coolers fulla slabs" photos :banghead) then my son got married on March 10. Since then it's been work, rain, and wind. So maybe we can get our fishing fix a little later in the spring.

Agree, sounds like it is sucking air somewhere. Possibly crankshaft seals.

Picked up boat today and me and the mech. took it to the lake. For a short trip on the water the motor ran flawless. Only some time will tell if she's "right"! Now back to work for 5 more days :( and THEN...finally...I will get to fish. Been off the water since March 10th so I'm ready! Right now an 8" fish would look pretty good to me.;):)

Post up your weekend fishing trips with all the details and pictures. That will have me chomping at the bit! Go get 'em boys.:)
