Hey guys i just received a 7.5' B&M crappie pole that I had ordered online. This is my first one and never got to hold one in my hand before now...it seems mighty stiff to me. It's actually stiffer than some medium action bass spinning rods that i have. I usually like a more moderate action for my crappie fishing rods. How do you guys like this rod? I had planned to use it for float and jig fishing, and some slip bobber with minnow fishing.
Jimmy ... it's probably stiffer feeling because it's IM7 graphite. But, for the purposes you intend to use it for, it should be a good rod. Using a float/jig or slipfloat/minner at any distance usually requires the rod to be a little stiffer .... so that it doesn't require a huge effort for a hookset like when using a rod that's lighter in action & has a parabolic bend.Quote:

It's not as bad as it feels, I use one to cast a float and jig early in the year. I thought the same as you, until I used it.

I love mine for deep water perch fishing on lak Erie. The stiffness lets me use a bigger weight to get down to forty feet or more, quicker. It’s so sensitive, I can feel light bites better than any other rods I have. I use braided line on it too. I like the twelve foot model for my crappie fishing.
I was thinking this rod would work well for white perch, I like a stiffer rod for that, I use a 3/4 bell sinker or spoon on the bottom of double rig, and often catch more than one fish at a time. Thanks for posting.
I've had my BnM Crappie Wizard for a few years and like it lots. 7.5 ft. Like Chaunc said, I use mine on Lake Erie for deep water perch. I use an egg sinker, bead, swivel, and snell hook. Does anyone know what the power and action ratings are? It's not listed on the rod. I know it's IM7.
a stiff 7.5 is something to work with , them noodle rods is for them folks that say you set the hook toooo hard ....:Rofl
cannot EVEN tell you numbers of fish that escaped me over the years due to a soft rod ,soft hookset...
lost a nice one yesterday for that VERY reason ...too far out and the rod was WAY whimpy and by the time it got to me ....
POOF it was gone ....:banghead
I'd much rather have a rod stiffer vs noodle rod. I too have lost many with a rod that just won't set the hook good.
I’ve had mine for quite a few years, and it is very stiff for a rod labeled as a Crappie rod. It often gets left home.

By the way, I have a 7' Bionic Blade IM8 rod with a Shimano Spirex 2000 reel, filled with PowerPro 10/2 braid ... that I've used for years for casting Road Runners or a Slider Pro Whirly Bee.
Never had to "set the hook", even at some distance. All I do is keep reeling and "pull" the rod back less than a foot. With the braid I have no stretch to account for, so a lot of times I don't even pull the rod back & simply just keep reeling. Don't remember losing many, if any, fish with this outfit.
One thing I've learned using a rod this stiff, is that the "thump" feels more like a "WHAM". Found that out casting a 1/16oz jig/plastics with a split-shot about 8-10" up the line. I was carefully watching the line for the telltale "jump" or "tic", as was the practice back in those days. But after the first bite or two I realized that wasn't going to be necessary. :)
I contacted BnM. They said the IM7 Crappie Wizard was rated Medium Light power, Medium Fast action. I like the rod, but agree that it's a bit stiff for a crappie rod. I do like using it for Lake Erie perch.....rigged with 1/2 oz egg sinker and red snell hook.
I made a label and placed it on my rod. ML Med Fast. Anal? Hmm, I say not, but I have an appreciation for those who are.
I have a Favorite White Bird rod....ML and slow action. 6'8". I like it lots but never sure which application to use it. Thoughts?
