Looking for opinions on new reels for my 16' PST's. I've had the Quantum lucky lefty baitcasters on and I really liked those, but the anti reverse is starting to play out on them. It's a real bad feeling when your pole starts to bend and you go to set the hook and bam a hugh backlash that you have to cut out. I've had enough of it. Just seeing what thoughts ya'll have?

Depth control is easier with baitcasters.
Spinning on trolling rods and line counters on tight lining and crank bait rods.
Go with what YOU want! I have baitcasters on mine but I've used spinning reels too!

Thanks for the input fellas. Which baitcasters are ya'll using. I really liked those quantum lucky lefty's other than they aren't very durable. The thing I liked about them was the flipping switch which made it super easy to let out line. Thanks again!

Give Grizzly a call. They usually stock some low end baitcasters by shakspeare for sun 25 each and had some lefties last I looked.
Brand don't mater. All will last 3-5 years and when they fail it'll be from abuse not mfg error.
I actuall ordered 3 direct from china via Amazon by a company called docooler that were about $23...10bb instant anti reverse, drilled spool low profile. Way nicer than the Shimano curados I was giving $150 a pop for back before I gave up bass fishing.
then again...they's less than $25. If they break, chunk em in the lake and get more.

I see that I am in the minority. I have just gotten used to a spinning reel because the first time I ever spider rigged, the guy I went with used them. I assumed that was the way to do it so I never changed. Could be that I don’t know what I am missing. Hmmm.........

Okuma 15s are hard to beat for the price.
I like spinning reels. Keep the drag loose and pull line out that way when fine tuning. I usually have an assortment of whatever the pawn shop had on hand as far as ultralight spinning reels go. Can't beat buying 15 spinning reels for $30! All they do is hold my line far as spider rigging goes.
Btw, if anybody needs some spinning rods, I got more than your shop can hold- they came with the reels. :)

I wish someone would step up and produce a made for crappie fishermen line counter reel. One that is much smaller. The market is there. I'd be willing to bet that if they were of good quality, fair priced and reasonably reliable, that 95% of the folks on this MS forum would have em. I may need to make friends with some Chinese machinists and/or plastic molding experts!
Mr Crappie Solo Reels. Hybrid between spinning reel and fly fishing reel. Decent disk drag. Super light. Super compact small. Allows me to fit 8 reels nicely in my Driftmaster rod locker transport rack. No reason for big bulky handles since the rod and drag does all the work. I have never 'reeled in" a fish spider rigging. Super affordable. THese types of reels are very popular with ice fishermen up in Yankee land. They are sometimes called inline reels. Made for vertical presentation and fighting fish in a hole which is very similar to fighting crappie in between narrowly spaced spider rigs. There are some that are more expensive that are made of aluminum and have high end star drags and spool tensionsers. But for my wallet, I like the Solo reels.

I used spinning reels for years, they work fine. I got some of the lefty baitcasters from Grizzly and haven't gone back. Love 'um. And they take up less room when they are strapped down on the deck.

Exactly what I did. Still use spinners when I fish with Kelly Capps. That’s what she knows. I see more of the pro tourney guys still using spinners tho.Quote:

No, you missed the point. I said small line counters built for crappie fishing. You're thinking of line counters like the ones we are familiar with. Think outside the box.
I do the same thing on my 16 foot poles marking them. How deep do you fish? On one of my primary lakes that I fish, in the winter, I regularly fish 25-30 foot deep. Sometimes deeper. The line demarcation method on the poles sucks when fishing that deep on top of dealing with fish that won't budge more than a couple inches, and all while staying on the spot and watching other lines for indications of bites and/or being in a brush top. We won't even discuss the hassle of changing over line counters for cranking.
Some of us need our equipment to pull double or triple duty. Not everyone can afford a complete set of Kentucky rigged rods and reels, C&C rods and reels, cranking, pushing, etc...wish I could, but I can't.
To argue that a quality, affordable, compact, light and built-for-crappie-fishing line counter reel that allows the angler to go from spider rigging to cranking to deep winter time finesse fishing, etc., without ever changing the reel, would be an act of weight adding futility is lost upon me. Someone will do it eventually, and when they do, once they get it right, just like the spider rigging rod holder and double seat rig that I'm sure folks thought was stupid looking when they first hit the water, they'll become a staple in every serious crappie fisherman's boat.
A light, compact baitcast reel with a line counter built in? Yes please.
Fish 30ft deep,single pole,spiderrig,pull jigs, and cranks.Small line counter would be nice,but why haven't they made one yet.I personally wouldn't want added weight,yes some would I agree.Longlining most baitcasters are hard to cast a light jig,takes forever hand lining them out.If they are small cheap and light how durable will they be.You can buy small baitcasters with digital line counters now,can't remember the price but there high.My okuma's are 8-yrs old and if something came out small and cheap I would probably replace them if they were durable.Quote:

Here are some cheap bait casters that work good. Have a set on one set of poles for about 5 years and not first problem. No flipping switch but like Wannabe said, buy extras and if you have a problem just chunk it and put on another.
