Looking to upgrade. Is side image worth the extra cost (crappie and bream only)? I've also read some are not reliable in less than 6', want to stay away from those. Appreciate any advise.

You won’t go wrong with a Humminbird Mega Chirp G2N.

I use Lowrance, but do recommend side imaging. I can drive by a dock and look and see if there are any fish under it. Helps when looking at brush piles too, if I don’t hit the waypoint exact.
Yes, and if I’m not mistaken, all the Humminbird Mega Chirp units are 360 compatable, but don’t quote me on that.Quote:

Does the optional transducer make a big difference?
The 360 transducer is a additional $850 -$1000 according to where you get it from. I recommend BBG Marine on the inter net. Brian is a super nice guy. Last week on my 360, I watched a fish turn and hit my jig. That was super cool. It all boils down to what you want and are willing to spend.Quote:

I think he was referring to the HDSI transducer. I'm not very fond of the 360. It's nice for spider rigging but I dont rig much.Quote:

Yes the HDSI. I intend on getting side image but two different transducers are offered. I read where HB will provide you the HD if you send them back the one that comes w/ the unit and a few dollars.
Call Humminbird but I think that the HDSI transducer comes with the mega chirp G2N unitsQuote:

Mega transducer is different than the HDSI transducer. The HDSI is for non-mega SI units.
Thanks Gabe....Do you know if the picture qualities much different w/ the mega vs HD transducer?
The non-mega images are good, even great sometimes. But compared to the Mega imaging, it would be like not wearing goggles underwater. The images have defined edges and great detail. You can almost tell what kind of fish it is from the shape. Here's a link to a thread with all kinds of comparisons.

:Rofl. Let me say this Ray and I'll be quiet, it's really not that tough of a decision. Get the better unit and be done with it. I have a old Humminbird 999 on the console and the mega chirp on the front. I only use the 999 for navigation. After seeing the picture quality between the two, I'm saving up my money to get the mega unit for the console. I don't need the better unit for the console, but when you see the difference in picture quality you just have to have it.Quote:

Got another question please, anybody have experience with garmin striker pls 7sv? Comparing it to helix 7 side view.
