Looking to upgrade. Is side image worth the extra cost (crappie and bream only)? I've also read some are not reliable in less than 6', want to stay away from those. Appreciate any advise.

You won’t go wrong with a Humminbird Mega Chirp G2N.
Thanks, do you recommend side image?
I use Lowrance, but do recommend side imaging. I can drive by a dock and look and see if there are any fish under it. Helps when looking at brush piles too, if I don’t hit the waypoint exact.
Yes, Helix 9 Gen 2 here ...worth every penny.

Does the optional transducer make a big difference?
The 360 transducer is a additional $850 -$1000 according to where you get it from. I recommend BBG Marine on the inter net. Brian is a super nice guy. Last week on my 360, I watched a fish turn and hit my jig. That was super cool. It all boils down to what you want and are willing to spend.
Was not planning on spending that much. Was wondering about the optional transducer that HB offers, I believe its HDSI.
Thank, Ray
Some help on Crappie but for finding Bream beds it is worth it's weight in gold. You don't need the 360. Get at least a 7 inch and Humminbird is what I have. It takes practice to use it but there are a SL of youtube videos that can really help. For crappie, I use SI to spot brush piles while I am trolling as you can look out left or right for up to 150 feet. For bedding bream, I will ride around at 5 MPH in areas where they usually bed. You can actually see the bed or craters on the screen. If it has a white dot on this bed, you have an active bed. if not, it is an old bed.
May the force be with you.
Yes the HDSI. I intend on getting side image but two different transducers are offered. I read where HB will provide you the HD if you send them back the one that comes w/ the unit and a few dollars.
Thanks Guys. Guess all that's left is pulling the trigger. Thanks for the suggestion of BBG marine, he has really good prices. Actually allows you to move up a size for about the same cost.
Thanks Again, Ray
Mega transducer is different than the HDSI transducer. The HDSI is for non-mega SI units.
Thanks Gabe....Do you know if the picture qualities much different w/ the mega vs HD transducer?
The non-mega images are good, even great sometimes. But compared to the Mega imaging, it would be like not wearing goggles underwater. The images have defined edges and great detail. You can almost tell what kind of fish it is from the shape. Here's a link to a thread with all kinds of comparisons.
SI comparison shots? Helix 12 non mega VS mega?
Thanks for the link. Man its a tough decision. Would really like the better view but the extra cost makes it tough. I'll just have to decide. Thanks Again!
Ray
:Rofl. Let me say this Ray and I'll be quiet, it's really not that tough of a decision. Get the better unit and be done with it. I have a old Humminbird 999 on the console and the mega chirp on the front. I only use the 999 for navigation. After seeing the picture quality between the two, I'm saving up my money to get the mega unit for the console. I don't need the better unit for the console, but when you see the difference in picture quality you just have to have it.
I agree with that! Don't buy a x99 unit. I mean a 899, 999, or 1199. Stick with the Helix units because they will still get software updates. The x99 units will not.
Thanks for the advise. I was looking at some of the older models on ebay but will defiantly stick w/ Helix.
Got another question please, anybody have experience with garmin striker pls 7sv? Comparing it to helix 7 side view.
Thanks, Ray
