I flip my Crappie.com calendar to March, and Bam! A great big ole slab sprawled across a cooler top.
What's the back story on that bad boy?

Thanks Hanr3 for inquiring for a backstory, so here is the short version. That big ol' slab was caught on one of my personal best days fishing at Grand Bayou. That was one of three 2 pound black crappie I caught in one day in march '17 spider rigging out in open water chasing baitballs around the lake. I had just started experimenting with spider rigging after meeting Duckcommando here on crappie.com and he started teaching me how it was done. (He actually lives on the lake and I use his boat launch.) It was a big ol' female and she weighted in at 2.20 and right at 15.50". She is also the same one in the picture that I am holding up

Great Pics.
That's a good one.
cool story - what is chasing bait balls - trying to figure out spyder rigging also
Starting in certain places in the lake depending on conditions I follow my electronics looking for threadfin shad that show up usually like balls or clouds suspended in the water column. Most days they'll all be around the same depth. Set your lines out above and around that depth and troll around them. That's where you can find nice size slabs chasing bait. Usually you won't load the boat but typically you catch larger than average size crappie

I was fishing a Crappie tournament last weekend and ran across a bait ball that blew up my sonar screen. The entire screen was bait, top to bottom, then I remembered this thread and for the life of me couldn't remember the tip on how to fish it. I won't forget it next time. Fish cover around the bait....
It ain't no 3lber but it's aahh NICE'un....:juggle
Very nice fish
