Crappie fishing with students from CCS 2/21/2018
I was so blessed to take Lily and Dixie out today on their first crappie fishing trip. It is the week of the Chattanooga Christian School interim and after teaching in class yesterday, today was our first day on the water. We fish from 8-12:15. The students have to get back to class in the afternoon. Tomorrow, I will get to take out two more students. Hopefully, we will have a good day of fishing. Today was tough for us.
The fish had moved and we struggled to catch 4 nice keepers and 1 short with a bonus big Shellcracker. We caught our fish under a float with a hair jig. We tried various techniques so that the girls could get an idea of the different ways that you can catch crappie and that was good for their education, but it didn't add any fish to our livewell. Grin.
Lily and Dixie had so much fun and it tickled me when Lily caught the first fish of the day, a nice 12.5" black crappie. Both girls were squealing with delight. But, I had a hard time getting Lily go hold the fish up for pics. Both were very wary of the fish. I told them that they didn't have any teeth and finally she held it up. The smiles that we had today was worth it all. As a bonus, we saw a flock of white pelicans sitting on a sand bar just cooling it. We had overcast weather and windy conditions which made it tough for beginning anglers, but both girls were troopers.
And, I get to do this again in the morning!
