I didn't see Kentucky Lake on there????
I have fished Lake Shelbyville and it is a great numbers lake and that's why they have an under's limit. 15 fish limit and 5 can be under 10 inches.
I can't believe Kentucky Lake isn't on that list!
Reelfoot is another great lake but for giant Crappie I think Kentucky Lake beats it.
So I guess this means all the KY boys are coming up here this year. LOL.
I usually fish Shelbyville a couple times a year but Have a place on Kentucky Lake. What I like about Shelbyville is there are no private homes on the lake and the shoreline is beautiful. It doesn't get a ton of pressure either, a great lake!!
For giant crappie, Shelbyville wouldn't be in the top 20

Rob Wow, Shelbyville?? Got the first one right! IMO I've fished 4 of the 7 listed And of the 4 they are good lakes and caught lots of fish when I've been there! My list would look different I'm sure. When You Heading to KY Lake Rob?
Going to play it by ear this year. Instead of going for a full week, I'm going to cherry pick the weather and shoot down for a couple long weekends. I have also thought of shooting down to Mississippi for a 4 day weekend too. Are you guiding down there this year?
I wish there was a more current article, this one is two years old

How did Carlyle Lake not make this list???????:deadhorse
Shelbyville but no Kentucky Lake? What is the biggest crappie the Shelbyville regulars have seen pulled out of there? would Shelbyville even make top 5 big crappie lakes in Illinois for a true giant?
Fished Shelbyville since it opened caught many 12 inch crappie over the years quite a few 13 inch several 14 inch and
ONE 15 inch a couple of years ago
Biggest Iv ever caught from the ville was 16.25” and it was in August. Barely weighed 2lbs. I have caught a handful of 2+lb fish spring and fall both but it’s not a frequent occurrence by any means.

thanks for the reply! I haven't heard of to many 2+ from Shelbyville so was curious. if I was to rank top 5 in Illinois that I fish regularly to catch a true giant slab it would be
1) farm pond (duh!)
2)Coffeen
3) Kincaid
4)Carlyle
5)Little Grassy
What is everyone else's top 5 Illinois giant slab lakes ?????
I remember years ago hearing about Smithland Pool being THE place to go in the midwest. Is it still a quality crappie water?
I didn't bother to read past #1. The author clearly has very little knowledge, he mentions "Realistically, any of the three major flood control reservoirs along I-55 in Mississippi (Grenada, Sardis, and Arkabutla)"... there are actually 4 lakes. Yeah, they forgot Enid where the world record white crappie just so happened to be caught. Also, Grenada is known as the home of the 3 pound crappie, not the king of it. So this article has zero credibility and stinks of someone who didn't even bother doing any basic homework, much less having any personal knowledge of the lakes mentioned
Kinkaid should make that list
I think a Shelbyville guide must have wrote that list I have fished Shelbyville for 45 years have only caught 3 crappie over 2 pounds. I must be fishing the wrong way.
A good READ if you are looking for a more accurate BIG Trophy Crappie Lakes! Written By Josh Gowan, Wired2Fish I would have to agree with his findings! www.wired2fish.com
I live on Kentucky lake and love catching them slabs. Leave it off the list so we wont have so much pressure is what I say.
I can think of 7 lakes in IL I'd rather fish for big fish than Shelbyville. I fish Shelbyville regularly. There are some nice 1.5# fish in there but some days all you can catch are hundreds of fish under 10" which is really fun action but after my third jig being chewed up it gets frustrating
Decatur has more big crappie than Shelbyville. Not as crazy numbers, but bigger.
