What kind of knot tying glasses do some of you guys use? I have 20/20 vision but at 46 years old, my arms are now getting too short to tie a jig head on. LOL
I figure I'll get some Dollar Gentral readers but wasn't sure what "power" I should start with. Any better idees?
Go in and take something with fine print with you and just try them on. Start out with, say, a 1.5 power and check them out to 2.5 or so. You will find the ones that work best and then as you age, keep checking them with the stronger powers.

Bama, I can tie em in the bright daytime but even with a good head lamp at night, or at dawn or dusk, it's just getting impossible.
I have a q beam headlamp. Lol

Yep, you are at that age. Mine went fast, I first noticed it while in fancy dim lit restaurants trying to read the menu. I have to use 1.5 readers to read almost anything, but I can tie knots without them. Go figure.
I have script glasses that I never wear, I just stay away from Flouocarbon line (stuffs invisable) hi vis line is what I like, when I tie a bunch of trolling rigs, I lay a black towel on the table which helps a lot.Quote:

Get the lowest power ones that work for you. Otherwise, you might get headaches.
Are you saying the knot is tough or getting the line through the eye is tough? The eye is hard for me and if its sunny out, sometimes it makes it harder especially with light jigs.
dollar store glasses by the bunches and leave them everywhere , maybe around 1.5 to start and work your way up as you age ....
I don't use them when I go ketchn but I have to have them to read and sometimes I wish I had them when I am ketchn ....lol
Take a piece of your line with you to one of the Dollar stores.
All of us reach the point where our arms are no longer long enough. I, like others have stated here, have a pair of Walmart readers. But I only use them when I want to see something.:biggrin Happy New Year to all!!
Stop by your local dollar store , buy a couple pair. in different strengths and see what works best for knots then order a pair of the magnetic clics in that power., I'm 73 tried every thing imaginable , shirt pockets , tackle boxes , lanyards , croakies , strings , necklaces , ex-wives ..$ 30 for a pair of clics some of the best moneyI ever spent . Works for me
I wear prescription glasses now, and have for a few years. For crappie, I always use hi-vis line. I started at 8#, then got some 6#, then 4#. This summer I decided to try some 2#. I ordered the Vicious, as I have heard nothing but good things, and they were all true. However, in lower light (near sunset), I had a heckuva time tieing knots! I’m a line watcher, and I also had a hard time seeing the twitches that we all know are so important. I’m not giving up, but I did re-spool with 4#!

The readers do help to see, but they do not turn up the light. That dimming is the early stages of cataracts. The lens begins to cloud and becomes stiffer with age. It doesn't bend as easily to adjust for distance and doesn't let as much light through. Thankfully we use very bright lights in surgery or suturing would be extremely difficult. Tying on a jig is tougher too in low light. That is the price of getting older, but it sure beats the alternative. I will just get stronger readers and a headlight and keep fishing
I've been using the Dollar Store or Dollar General bi-focals for years. Hard to find the bi's anymore. The POWER as explained to me by my optometrist is the DISTANCE at which you should see things in focus. i.e. 2,5 is 2 1/2 feet away. I used to think the lower number meant you weren't so bad off yet. Not according to him
A buddy of mine found some polarized sunglasses with bifocals at 1.5 power. Bought them at Wal-Mart.

Cataracts are a family heritage on my Dads side, but as of my last eye appointment, I have no signs of them starting. That's been a couple of years ago but I know they are slow to progress so they haven't magically appeared.Quote:

My eyes didn't go until 46, and they went in about 2 months. There are lots of things to look forward to at 40 though. Lot's more nose hair, growing at a faster rate, crazy old man eyebrows, ear hair, hemorhoids, getting up early because it hurts to bad to lay in bed. Lots and lots to look forward to. :)Quote:
