Excellent density ! Allow for setting in uneven slopes by attaching "X" rebar, PVC pipe thru each bottom to maximize their stability if snagged by a boat anchor, about 22-24" generally works well even on inclines such as the mouth of a former stream now submerged. Laid shallow to deep they will serve nicely ! Enjoy !
Those will flat work

Those are really nice...most people make the mistake of not filling the bucket and the density is just not there.
Look at how you have them sitting on your property...that's a good pattern for the lake also! You want a close grouping that maximises the number of Crappie they can hold. Open areas in the middle of the grouping is fine, to allow movement from the interior.
Thinking about dropping 8 around the boat in each spot.

Good job nice work bet u will have all the crappie u want at them bucket stakes.....:cheers2:biggrin
Second photo looks best . I like to spread out the stakes in each bucket . We cut buckets in half and makes them easier to spread . A half bucket is plenty of concrete for 8 to 10 good stakes . We just put dry quickcrete in the bucket and add water, then add stakes. No need to go to the trouble of premixing concrete . We place 6 to 12 to a spot . They are great and hardwood stakes last for years submerged . Also use a PVC stake driver to put in without concrete or buckets . Check out this on youtube .
I wish we had spread them all out like the second photo. I will cut the buckets in half next time. Thanks for the tip.

Where do you get the stakes for these?
If you were asking me I was told they make hardwood floors from the boards. These are what is trimmed off the board to square them up. They have so many that they burn the trimmings. The guy I got them from said he uses them for crappie also. They were put out in Feb last year and we have yet to catch a fish off them. I did notice before I put them out it had rained in the buckets and the water looked tea colored so maybe that needed to leach out before fish would get on them. We put about 9 per pile and came back later and added 2 bamboo buckets per pile.

It's disappointing the buckets are not holding fish. Likewise, I put out several bamboo condos last year and caught very few fish in them. Yet, my natural brush piles were loaded almost instantly. Fish can be trickier than women to figure out!!!
I appreciate your response!
I'm envious. I haven't had the results from pvc condos I made using the porcupine spheres that I placed in both of my boat slips.
I know. I cut 2 decent size trees and sunk them the last of June and caught a fish off them after 2 weeks. I haven't given up on my buckets but if they don't produce this year I'm going back to sinking trees.

FYI, cardboard boxes work great for making stake "buckets" I got that tip from Lowe175. I add fiberglass to my concrete so the stakes on the edges don't fall out or break out of the concrete. You wouldn't have to worry about that with buckets, but I got a bag of the fibers from the concrete place for a couple of dollars.
will you make up some of those for me? lol looks nice
Lol. I don't think I'm going to make any more for myself. That was lots of work.

I make the exact beds as pictured in the second pic. I use drywall screws to hold all outside stakes to the bucket. I also put one good stake in the middle and thats where I drill a 5/8 hole through so I can put a rope through when I set them. I hold both ends of rope and put bucket in water and once I get to where I want it I let it go down and make sure its setting well I then toss on end of the rope in and pull it out of the bucket. This works really well. I usually put 6 buckets around a bouy then get my GPS mark on it and also where I want my boat to be. This is where I stop so I don't run over my beds. Another thing I started doing since I am 65 now is I take a Metabo and cut about 4 " off the top of my 5 gal bucket then I lower it down and screw it together with screws . This shortens the height of the bucket and I always fill it full of cement. It really helps with the weight of the finished bucket. Now if you could come to Barkley lake and drop your beds there I !!!!
Those look good!
those look very nice. Another spot to consider would be in a ring around standing timber that currently produces crappie, somewhere between 10-20 feet beyond the visible timber. You will know that crappie like the area and most people never check around standing timber for sunken brush piles.
