What is the strangest species of fish that you have caught? Mine is a tie. 1) a Grinnell (bowfish) from Illinois' Wabash River. 2) Eelpout from Minnesota's Rainey Lake.

I ketched lots a odd things over the years,, a sea cucumber one time and an Irish lord or 3 and about everything else you can imagine ...the ratfish off kodiak was pretty strange as well ...to name a few
I caught my brother once, and he’s pretty weird sometimes.
Tile fish in Saltwater was weird.
I caught a buzz one time while fishing...:biggrin
Even though it's not actually a "fish" ..... I'd say a "Mudpuppy" from the KY River ... back in my teen years.
But the strangest "thing" I've caught was a pop top soda can ... with a weedless jig ... hooked in the pop top :yikes (Watts Bar Lake, Tn)
I was catfishing here at Perry Park.
Decided to check my bait cuz these lakes are known for their turtles.
So I'm reeling in and my line gets heavy.
On instinct I set the hook.
I'm thinking I just snagged me a whopper of some sort.
So I'm reeling like a madman.
Only this fish isn't fighting.
I'm thinking I just got me a turtle.
Mmm! Mmm!
I gonna eat good!
So I get it closer to the bank, and I see black.
Hmm???
So I reel it in and I just caught me a 55...
Not pound...GALLON!!! garbage bag full of somebody's trash that they submerged in the middle of the lake.
Some clown must have got bored and cleaned out his boat.
Figured no one was around so he'll just chuck it right here.
Talked about pissed.
Not only did I have to catch it, I had to drive it home and put it in my can.
Not on a hook and line but I shot a triple tail goldfish while bowfishing that weighed 3 pounds. That was on West Point Lake probably in 1993. I thought it was a sunken orange NERF football. I guess whoever flushed it down the toilet never thought it would make it.
Oh and I caught a Mussle while stripe fishing that was as big as my hand. The whole sassy shad was inside the Mussle. It must have been open and feeding and my bait landed in it. I thought I had a 20 lb stripe on. Was fishing in the tailrace below Guntersville dam and in that current that Mussle was turning like a boat prop. It would run up river, then head back down river. My pole was doubled over.
Toad fish at Guanna River dam just north of St Augustine Fl. Butt ugly!

My friends Dad carried us fishing when we were kids. His sister, about 6-8 swung back to cast from the bank and when the rod came forward, a game warden came out of the bushes screaming with a hook in his lip.
A coffee can puts up one heck of a fight on a 12 ft bgjp.
Caught a Lamprey Eel once out of the Ct. River. That was back in the 60's. Aweful looking creature.
Mine would be a Starfish --- I too have a number of Objects
I caught a trolling motor once, biggest thump I ever had.
"gene"
Practice cast in the yard...i was ab 13 or so and I was casting a crankbait or a pop r y'all know lots of hooks....so anyway it got hung to some grass and I jerked to get it free....and i hooked my own Ear lmmao

Well—closest I can get was when I gigged a mud duck while frog gigging. Hooked him good, flopping around, screaming enough (me and the duck) to bring dad running. His buddies had a hoot and I had my butt beat (that is how it worked back then).

The weirdest fish I've caught with a hook and line are eelpout, tulibee, and smelt.
Accidentally intercepted a crow mid-air with a crankbait one time while fishing a pond. Thankfully none of the hooks stuck.
I guess I have had several. A few years ago I caught a white egret that just couldn't live without the rattletrap I was casting into a canal behind my in-law's place in Fort Meyers. Stupid thing tried to grab it in mid air and wrapped his legs up in the line. I had to reel it up then release it in full view of the neighbors who weren't real happy about some KY redneck fishing in their back yard at 5:30 AM all while the bird was screaming it's head off. We both were OK in the end.
Probably 30 or more years ago I was fishing a small crappie jig on a Billy Westmoreland 4 1/2 foot ultralight rod in Ledbetter Creek on KY Lake in December. Hadn't seen another boat all day. As I was swimming the jig in 20+ feet of water, something B-I-G hit it and headed for parts unknown. I just backed the drag off and let it go, thinking it was a huge smallmouth. As I started to gain line, I could see a shape that looked 4 feet long coming up. I got the net and got it on the bow of the Skeeter. I looked at it for what seemed a minute till I realized it was a musky.
Now parts of KY have world class musky fishing but I had never seen or heard of one on KY Lake. I picked it up by the gill plate and held it at belt level and it's tail dragged the deck. Not being a musky fisherman, I had zero idea what it weighed and since I din't have a camera or need to spend the $$ to mount it, I dropped it back over the side.
I've not seen or even heard of one being caught in KY Lake since.
Caught this a couple springs ago up here at Shenango Lake. Not sure if it's a bluegill or crappie. Even our area biologist couldn't figure it out. I tossed it back after a couple pics.

Have caught some really ugly fish before and some objects, but as youth do strange things sometimes, I have caught a snake and an alligator on purpose. When board you know how a young mind works, lol! If I think hard there is no telling what else I would remember, lol!
