I filmed this a couple weeks ago. The most frustrating times of the year are periods between open water in ice. Let me know if you have ever punched through ice to launch a boat.

Glad it is you and not me time to move south thanks
I have slid to the water line a couple of times when launching, a nervous time. Busted Ice on one trip mid lake, and won't do that again anytime soon.
That’s when I winterize my boat when you hear the scratching on the sides to get to open water [emoji79]

Many times I've busted through ice to get to open water. Not uncommon around IN.

I have done it many times duck hunting but never fishing.
Winterize? We don't know what that means. Busted ice more than I can count. Also carry kitty litter and sand for the ramps when it is below freezing.

Yes, I've broke ice before backing in and it broke my transducer mount,I've also powered slowly through ice,it scratched the paint up on the bottom of my aluminum boat.
Years ago (when we were a lot younger), we use to break ice in March to get to open water. Not so much these days!
Thanks for sharing the video.
I'm a Southerner through and through, but I did lived in SD for four years. The hunting and fishing was great during the small window of opportunity available compared to what I was accustomed to down South. I thought I would try ice fishing, but right before I went, a guy was sitting there over his ice hole and was attacked by a mountain lion. Y'all (northerners) have an extra gene us Southerner guys don't have, or need. Cold tolerance is not a virtue and can be bred out of y'all if you will just move South! ;-)
A few years back, in a long drawn out Michigan spring, I was chomping at the bit to get the boat in the water and was watching the ice on a local lake slowly deteriorate. After a very windy day I found that the ice had broken up and the lake was finally open water. I called my brother in law and we agreed to give it a try the following day. The wind died over night and the temp dropped into the high teens/low 20's. When we got to the launch shortly after daylight we found that the lake had skinned over with 3/4" of ice with just enough open water at the launch to get the boat off the trailer. We motored slowly, letting the weight of the boat break the ice in front of us until we got to our fishing spot, then used the landing net to scoop ice out of our trail so we could fish. You should have seen the looks we got from the residents when they saw two guys in a boat in the middle of a frozen lake, fishing like they didn't have a care in the world.
I have done it many a time with my aluminum jon boats. I don’t worry about the paint,,,that’s why paint comes in a spray can. :Rofl
Hard part of winter is being cooped up with my wife. She agrees, but reverses the complaint.
We call ice breaking boats "tin cans". In mild winters, you will see guys slide the tin cans across shore ice to get to open water. In the spring, they watch the wind, slide into the river, and get a few hours of jigging with the icebergs.
On thin ice, we slide kayaks on the ice, push ourselves out with screw drivers, punch holes with hammers, and use our ice gear

I've broken ice to shoot ducks but never to crappie fish.
I get cold just thinking about it [emoji849]

I hear all this stuff, but you diaper babies don't understand that for us older mature folks, anything below 70 is "freezing".
Breaking ice ? Sometimes we throw a bag of ice on the pavement so we can get it all in the cooler . :biggrin
What Eagle1 said lmao

This is a subliminal message to all of those of you with that "gene". The message is that ice is necessary down here because of the weather. Whereas y'all can just air freeze your catch (assuming you can even launch your boat), we have to take extra measures to ensure freshness.....year round. ;-)
Another plus is you can drive on it right to your favorite spot!....and you can do donuts getting there.
Lake Michigan (Kate’s Bay) February 2011, ice was 30 inches thick.

They said it was 30 inches just before I drove over the spring:dono
No springs in little or big Bay de Noc.
First time I drove my truck on the ice was on Michigans Houghton Lake. To say I was nervous is an understatement. Before I went on the ice I walked out about 100 yards with my auger to check ice thickness. I augered and augered and augered until I was down close to 18". When I finally broke through there was no water under the ice, only sand. Dulled a new set of blades.
Winter is hands down my favorite time to fish. Parking lot is empty, no lake lice, and every spot is usually all yours. And the always bite and are very predictable. I'll break ice any day...lol.
