Trying to decide which rods to buy for spider rigging. Narrowed my choices down to the southern crappie 16’ or the BnM pst 16’. This is going to be a buy once, cry once deal for this poor ‘ol country boy since I’m most likely going to buy 8 rods and a couple extra tips since I tend to be rough on my stuff. Which ones should I buy?
I’d have to say that it depends on how you plan to fish. I like my SCR 14 but some heavier rods to push cranks has crossed my mind.
There will be many opinions on this, but me for one like's the Wally Marshal Tight line Specials. Yes, they are a bit heavy compared to others. But, no rod that I have seen, were as durable and tough. I have slung many 1.5 to 1.75 crappie in the boat without the need for a net. 30 plus pound cats, 8 pound bass, countless stripers were no match. Never have I broken one. Not many rods can make that claim, and they are easier on the bank account.
Southern crappie for me. I have 12's and 14's. Had 16's and didn't like them because fishing by myself most of the time they were a bit unwelldie to try to land good fish. No need for tips with them unless your real rough. B&M get extra tips.
I'm with Cray, I'd go for the southerns. I personally fish 8-14s in my spread and love them! I've caught fish in as shallow as 2-3 ft of water in the spring and never felt like I needed to go longer except I have used a pair of 16s long-lining.
Those southerns are very durable rods and I love their action. I run 1/2 oz sinker while tightlining and they hold it well. I've fished with the BnMs and they are good too. But, regardless of length, I'd spend my money on the southerns for many reasons including durability.

Choosing between the Southerns and the PSTs, Southerns win hands down, way more durable!
Thanks for the input. I have been leaning toward the Southern Crappie Rods fairly hard. I really like the fact that they are local and I can ride up to Mr dukes place about an hour away.
He is also a sponsor of this website so it's always good to support these guys. He is good to deal with too. Mark at the Crappie Hole in Chapin carries his rods. That's where I got mine. I have B&M,SC and Pinnacle Limit rods. They all serve their purpose.Quote:

Unless I was going to Push jigs & cranks on occasion, I would get BnM Capps/Coleman 14' rods, rather than the PST's .... reason being, they are a bit more limber in the tip & show lite bites better. I use mine for Pushing, both the PST & the C/C rods, but don't do a lot of Spider Rigging ... I'm basing what I said on what my other Spider Rigging buddies have said (& what they use).
Even Mr Duke has realized that Spider Rig rods & Pushing rods are slightly different in their tip action, and now offers a trolling (Pushing) version (which can be used with much heavier weights).
Southern crappie rods hands down and get the heavy set. I have 8 regular rods and recently added 8 heavy rods for pushing jigs. Scottymoe and I used the heavies recently in Kentucky and for the average fisherman they work with 1/2 oz weight all the way up to 3 oz. I use the 14 ft rods and I am happy with them.
I've used lot of different rods. My choice now is the Southern Crappie rods. I have 6 16 footers,2 14 footers 2 twelve's. I can used these rods Spider Rigging,long lining or pulling cranks. Cannot asked for a better man then Ed Dukes to do business with.

Southern crappie for me also, make sure you buy the heavy rods so you can run more weight.
